You read the title right: this is another gun control article. Before getting into the control part, let's just go over the gun part.
The Mass Shooting Tracker defines a mass shooting as "four or more people at the same time." By this definition, there have been 355 mass shootings for only 336 days in 2015.
On December 2nd, 3 gunmen stormed a center for people with developmental disabilities in San Bernadino, California. 14 people were killed and 17 more were injured in this attack. This is the deadliest mass shooting since the Sandy Hook Elementary School Massacre in 2012.
This map, updated and maintained by Reddit users, displays all the locations that mass shootings have occurred and the lives that they have claimed this year:
It's clear this this is a problem, and this is just the mass shootings. Around 11,000 people have been killed in gun-related incidents this year. This number had been decreasing over the past two decades, but now it's on the rise again.
Here is a map of our gun violence compared to cities around the world:
Now let's get into the control.
Democratic Senator Charles Schumer (N.Y.) announced that he and a group of other Democrats will be forcing votes on a series of gun control amendments. These will include strengthening background checks, cracking down on tightening the process of obtaining weapons, and improving the aid available for mental health.
This issue has also been approached by presidential candidates; Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders, and Martin O'Malley have all spoken out about restricting gun availability and use in the United States. Bernie Sanders, who has been accused of not taking a strong enough stance on this issue in the past, said, "This nation is divided over gun legislation, that is a simple fact, that’s the reality... The good news is that there’s broad consensus ... among people who agree on common-sense gun safety legislation."
Plenty of other countries have restricted their gun laws. In 1996, Australia banned semiautomatic and automatic rifles and shotguns and they instituted mandatory buy-back for the banned weapons. The result? Gun homicides fell by 59% and gun suicide by 65%. Gun violence is also falling throughout Europe who have adopted similar programs.
So, what are we waiting for, U.S.A? When we value the lives of our citizens and public safety more than we do right now, we'll find that tighter gun control is an unavoidable part of the equation.
