Winter Break. A college student's two favorite words, after perhaps chicken nuggets or puppies of course. After this fall semester, it's all we look forward to once finals are finally over. There is nothing better than the feeling of leaving your dorm and not looking back, free of the stairs and shared bathrooms and obnoxious neighbors down the hall.
At home, you lose your independence and trade it in for good food and quality company with family and some old friends. Your sleep schedule concerns your parents, and catching up with old friends has never been more needed. From stories about the wild nights you can't remember to the classes you basically failed, it's always good to talk to people who actually get your struggles, and won't judge you for them.
By and by, things kind of get old fast. Your friends are all going back to school before you do, and your parents start to get on your nerves once again. Being home certainly has major perks, but there's nothing quite like the feeling of being at school with your people on your campus.
For those of us up north, we know we're going to be freezing our butts off and probably slipping on the poorly shoveled sidewalks and roads, but it's so worth it. Going to bed at 2 am is acceptable again, and throwing on sweats and a baggy sweatshirt is the new norm for many of us who have to will ourselves to wake up for 8 and 9 a.m. classes.
Believe me, I invested in some solid yoga pants to wear to class every day, because jeans take more effort than I'll probably want to make at 7:30 in the morning.
Oddly enough, even after the semester I had, I'm gleeful for classes to begin again. That's right, GLEEFUL. Without classes to keep me busy, my mind gets the best of me. Overthinking about this or that becomes a hobby I would prefer to not have. Classes offer a stimulant for my mind, forcing me to keep it sharp and work it to the best of its abilities.
I especially look forward to the classes I'm going to take. I switched majors, and I'll finally be in classes I can flourish in, instead of fail. I plan on making myself a truly better student than ever before, and with this new major, I can do just that.
So yes, I am actually excited for classes to begin. Are you?
