Go to college they said. It'll be fun they said. Which I guess isn't entirely false. Undergrad truly has been the best four years of life! I mean, I met an amazing guy, made friends that I know I'll have for the rest of my life, got a new car, a great job, so many great memories. But, don't let it all fool you. College is NOT ALL FUN AND GAMES.
It's a pretty harsh truth. You get to college with this idea in your head, like you see in the movies, a "Project X" or "Neighbors" kind of deal. And please don't get me wrong here, I totally went out and had a blast these past four years. There have been plenty of times where I've looked back on my phone from the night before to find too many selfies and definitely too many videos of myself singing Britney Spears like it's no one's business.
But school is no joke kids. I am here to tell you that, yes, I am a college student, but no, I don't go out and party every weekend.
I would love to go out more than I do. But at this point in a college career, it becomes very very difficult. I have an internship that takes up a lot of my time! On the days that I don't have class, I wake up at 6:30 a.m. (yes on Fridays I wake up 6:30 a.m. - therefore what even is thirsty Thursday?). I work for most of the day until it's time to come home and work out to keep myself sane, and then it's time to do probably 5 hours of homework.
On the days I do have class, it's a race against time to get from campus to my uptown office in about 20 minutes while tackling lunchtime traffic. On the weekends, I'm usually working out or napping or studying. It is what it is.
College will take its toll on you. If you want to succeed you have to work your ass off!
You get to a point where partying becomes so low on your list of priorities that you start to feel a little bit like a grandma (well at least that's how I feel).
But none of the above are necessarily bad! Yes, you are running on fumes sometimes (but that's what the napping is for, right?). It is worth it. I promise it is worth it. You're not lame. And you're not alone. College WILL be the best few years of your life! And yes you should totally have nights where you let loose, you party, you dance and sing so offbeat! But you will also learn how to be independent! How to work for what you want and to achieve your goals! You'll learn skills that will land you your dream job! And you'll balance school and work and somewhat of a social life, like a champ!
So yes, I am a college student, and no, I don't go out and party every weekend. But I am growing, I'm learning, I'm working my ass off, and it's all worth it!
