Yep, I’m a mama’s girl. Up until college, I wouldn’t have labeled myself that way, but after just the first few days of dorm life, I realized how much I need her. Turns out, being miles apart has only made us closer. She is of the most important people in my life and here's why.
1. She's my best friend.
You know when something amazing happens to you and you want to tell that one person right away? She's that person. Most days I find myself missing her and planning out our days for the next time I see her with trips to the mall which is really just an excuse for us to get Starbucks and people watch.
2. I call her every day.
Even when I have absolutely nothing to say I’ll call just to say hi. Going more than a day without hearing voice feels strange and I love knowing that she will pick up no matter what, allowing me to spew whatever nonsense is on my mind, even though telling stories about my college friends only serves to leave her trying to remember who’s who.
3. She listens.
Venting all my issues, and honestly whining like a child, is something we all need occasionally, and my mom is happy to be the one to nod along to my latest rant. I can be completely honest with her and never feel that she's uninterested in my problems even though there are definitely times that's true.
4. She sends me back to school with all my favorite treats.
The best way to get through exams and the stress of college classes is good old fashioned junk food. She knows exactly what size bag of Skittles I like and makes sure to send me back with at least 2 packs of Oreos. Without her, I’d be stuck with dreaded dining hall food always.
5. She is the only person I want to spend award show season with.
The Grammys, the Oscars, the Golden Globes, and the rest of the ridiculously long events of gorgeously dressed celebrities is one of mine and my mom’s guilty pleasures. Even if were apart, she’s the first person I text to rate Emma Stone’s red carpet look and to make fun of the cringe-worthy interviews conducted by the E correspondents.
6. Movie nights are our thing.
We have the same taste in movies and know not to talk over the best scenes. No matter the circumstances, my first night home whether for just a weekend or a long break, is spent on the couch with popcorn, a rom-com and my mom by my side.
7. We have the same amazing taste in music.
How many people can say their Mom's most recently played songs on itunes are EXACTLY the same as theirs? I know how lucky I am to have someone who loves Timeflies as much as I do but will also dance with me to Marky Mark's Good Vibrations when the mood strikes. Our car rides consist of a lot of off-key duets and I wouldn't have it any other way.
I wouldn't trade my mom for anyone in the world. Wine nights, shopping sprees, day trips to the city and summer nights sitting by the fire, we will find just about any excuse to be around one another. As strange as it might seem, some of my favorite memories are spent doing completely unextraordinary things with my pretty extraordinary mom.
