Every year people set New Year’s resolutions that end up being unrealistic and difficult keep up with. This year is going to be the year you finally stick to those goals because I have written a list of realistic New Year’s goals you can set.

You can try one or all of these. Whichever goals you chose to set, they will make your this year a little better than the last.

1. Stick to a healthy sleep schedule.

Studying during the week until 3 am and then sleeping until 2 pm on the weekends is only making it more difficult to wake up for class and is probably the reason you are getting sick so often. Try making, and more importantly sticking to, a new practical sleep schedule.

2. Live in the moment.

Setting goals and looking toward the future is important, but you only get to live each moment once, so try not to get too caught up in daydreaming.

3. Make your own coffee.

Save $5 each day by skipping Starbucks and making your own coffee at home before you leave for class.

4. Get ready each day for you.

If you feel extra motivated when you look cute, then spend an extra 30 minutes to get ready in the morning. If you work best when you are comfy, then throw on some sweats and call it a day. Whatever you do, when you get ready in the morning, get ready for you, not to impress someone else.

5. Read recreationally.

Books are actually entertaining believe it or not and can be nice break from school work and electronics.

6. Take weekend trips.

School is stressful and so you deserve breaks. When you finally allow yourself a day off it usually turns into a day of sleeping. Make this year one to remember and take little weekend trips when you allow yourself some time off.

7. Go to office hours.

Actually going to office hours can only help you. You can get help on class materials from the professor or make sure they know who you are for when you ask for a recommendation.

8. Listen to new music.

I’m sure your taste in music is great, but there are so many amazing songs out there for you to discover so listen to something new. Check out this article for some new artist!

9. Take the stairs.

It’s not always easy to fit a work out into your busy schedule, so the minimum you could do is take the stairs instead of the elevator to your third floor lab.

10. Keep a planner.

This is the year you won’t miss a meeting, assignment, or birthday!

11. Eat out less.

Eating out adds up quickly, so try limiting yourself to buying a meal once or twice a week to save some money.

12. Stop looking for a romantic relationship.

Often times we can get caught up “looking” for love which ultimately ends up wasting time, energy, emotions, and leaves us missing out on opportunities. Stop looking and just live your life and that’s when what you want will come to you.

13. Check social media less frequently.

We all secretly hate social media; it’s feels like a competition for likes and lowers productivity. There’s no need to cut it out your life entirely, but just limit how many times a day you actually check it.

14. Take a girls' trip.

You and your girls are always complaining about how you need a break from everything, so this year, finally take that girls trip you have always been talking about!

15. Paint your nails.

Manicure and pedicures are a luxury, and while they are nice, that money could be spent on something more productive. Paint your own nails and save the money!

16. Do laundry more often.

You’d be surprised by how many more outfit options you have when you do laundry more than once a month.

17. Forgive someone.

Holding a grudge takes so much energy.

18. Budget your grocery shopping trips.

This year is about saving money and when you go to the grocery store, a lot of the time you overbuy so try budgeting to save a little.

19. Apply for something.

Whether it is for a scholarship, job, internship, or new organization, apply!

20. Wash your hair less.

This one might sound like the opposite of what you think you should do and maybe a little gross, but washing your hair too often is actually very bad for it and can cause it to dry out. It takes a few cycles to get your hair to adjust to the new wash schedule, but when it finally does it’ll thank you.

21. Do a face mask once a week.

By doing this, it forces you to take a little relaxation break. Not to mention your skin will be glowing.

22. Update your resume.

You have done a lot of big things, time to finally add them to the resume!

23. Try yoga.

Yoga is a great way to exercise, take a break, and clear your mind.

24. Start a passion project.

Often times, during college we don’t get a lot of time to dedicate toward our hobbies and things we love outside of education. This year start a project that you can work on in your free time over the next year or so.

25. Keep a journal.

A journal is a great way to reflect on the things going on in your life as well as be an outlet for emotions and ideas. You can keep it in the notes app on your phone for convenience.

26. Use less heat on your hair.

Put the curling away, the straighteners, curling irons, and blow dryers.

27. Read the news.

What’s going on in the world around us is important and I know it might not feel like we always have time to sit down and learn about it, but take a few minutes each day to stay up to date.

28. Take vitamins.

Stay healthy and have childhood flashbacks by taking those Flintstone vitamins.

29. Compliment others.

It’s really easy to judge people around you but it’s easier to give compliments.

30. Do more of what makes you happy.

This one is just as simple as it sounds.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
