2016 was a big year for women. Not only did Hillary top the list of “female firsts,” but women broke barriers everywhere from sports to politics to Hollywood. That being said, these shouldn’t be firsts: they should be the established norm. Hence, I give you eight reasons to believe that women killed the game in 2016:
1. Hillary Clinton’s Presidential Campaign
Hillary was the first woman to become a nominee for one of our nation’s two major political parties. Hillary showed that women are capable of running our country. Although she didn't win and shatter the glass ceiling once and for all, we’ll get it in 2020.
2. Claressa Shields Made History With Two Olympic Boxing Gold Medals in the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics
She is the first U.S. boxer -- man or woman -- to do this. You go, girl.
3. Beyonce’s Super Bowl Halftime Show
Beyonce surprised the world by releasing a new single, “Formation,” while performing on stage at the Super Bowl. The song was aimed toward the #BlackLivesMatter Campaign and showed us the importance of standing up for what we believe in.
4. Women broke the color barrier in the U.S. Senate
The 2016 Election was not all bad: The first ever Latina and Indian-American women were elected into the U.S. Senate.
5. The first ever Domestic Violence Center was opened in Saudi Arabia
Women in Saudi Arabia continue to be oppressed by their male counterparts, yet the opening of this center means that women have an outlet for help in their domestic relationships.
6. Felicity Jones in Rouge One
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Felicity Jones was the highest-paid star in the film by far because she negotiated her contract so heavily. This is huge considering the constant wage gap in America, but Jones proved that women are capable of equality if we just stand up and fight for what we deserve.
7. Tsai Ins-wen was elected the first female president of Taiwan
Come on, America. We’ve got some catching up to do.
8. Cassie De Pecol is attempting to set the Guinness World Record for being the fastest woman to visit every country in the world
While doing so, she is promoting world peace in all of the countries that she visits.
Let's go, girls, and make 2017 even greater!
