There's nothing like settling in with a good book and enjoying a day of living in another world. I know so many people who don't like to read, but I contend that they just haven't found the right book for them. I read across genres: fantasy, realistic fiction, science fiction, romance, historical fiction, mysteries. You name it, I've probably read it. To help my literary challenged friends, I've compiled a list of some of my favorite books/series. So whether you're a veteran or a rookie I've probably got something on this list that you'll enjoy.
To start the summer off right here is a list of my favorite books that bend reality either by taking place in a completely different world or adding a supernatural component to ours.
1. "The Demon King" by Cinda Williams Chima
"The Demon King" is the first of four books in my all time favorite series, The Seven Realms series. The Seven Realms series follows a former thief who steals a powerful amulet and the crown princess of the realm. This series is perfect for fantasy lovers who want a twist on the traditional fantasy structure of wizards, royalty and love. Oh, and our female lead is a strong and independent woman.
2. "The Imposter Queen" by Sarah Fine
What would you do if everything you've been raised to know is a lie? When the magic she always thought she'd inherit doesn't come Elli is forced to run away from the cushy life she has always lived. But despite her lack of magic she refuses to abandon her people. Pick up this book to start a series with more twists and turns than you could ever imagine. But be ready to cry when you get to the last book in the series.
3. "Hero" by Perry Moore
What's it like having a superpower when your dad is a former superpowerless superhero? Just ask Thom. What's it like hiding the fact that you are on a trial run to be accepted into the superhero crime-fighting league that ostracized your father? Just ask Thom. What's it like hiding the fact that you're gay from everyone? Just ask Thom. While superpowers may not be real the emotions this book gives you certainly are.
4. "Zeroes" by Scott Westerfield, Margo Langan and Deborah Biancotti
An interesting twist on the usual superhero novel seeing as the superpowers include seeing through someone else's eyes, having a voice that can get whatever you want, crashing technology, everybody forgetting who you are, someone who can give crowds emotions, and someone who is a natural born leader. With these powers, disaster is bound to follow.
5. "The Lightning Thief" by Rick Riordan
If you haven't heard of Percy Jackson and the Olympians you are probably living under a rock. Rick Riordan is one of the most prolific writers of the time. He is constantly at the top of the bestseller list. Pick up "The Lightning Theif" and you'll know why. Follow Percy as he discovers that yes the Greek gods are real and yes his life is about to get a whole lot more complicated (and dangerous).
6. "Of Poseidon" by Anna Banks
Mermaids aren't real, right? Wrong. When Galen learns that Emma can communicate with sea creatures he leaves his underwater kingdom to come and find her. It turns out that there is more to the story than either of them ever thought possible. This series is the perfect blend of fantasy, realistic fiction and romance.
7. "As You Wish" by Chelsea Sedoti
What would you wish for if you knew whatever wish you made on your 18th birthday would come true? Eldon has less than a month before his 18th birthday and, unlike the rest of his town, he has no idea what he is going to wish for. All wishes seem to lead to regret and he can't wish for the one thing he really wants, so what's a boy to do?
8. "In 27 Days" by Alison Gervais
If Death offered you the chance to bring back a classmate who committed suicide earlier that week would you take it? Would you still take it even if you never really knew him? Would you still take it if you only had 27 days to change his mind? What if there was another supernatural being trying to stop you from saving him? Follow Hadley on her journey as she tries to change Archer's mind in 27 short days.
