I've always been one of those people who sees an interesting article on Facebook, clicks on it and reads through the whole thing. Over the semester break this year, I began to find that a lot of the articles I was reading were written by my friends and people I knew, and I began to wonder how people just like me could write for such a popular website. As I began to look into it, I found that Armstrong has its own Odyssey chapter as well. I sent in an application, and fortunately, I was chosen to join the team of writers.
One of the questions on the application, and likely the most important, was, why do you want to write for Odyssey? At the time, I thought it was a simple question that everyone would answer the same, basic way (which I did), but as I began my journey as a writer, I've really been able to see and embrace all of the awesome opportunities that this job entails.
I write for the Odyssey because it gives me a chance to express myself and have my voice heard. If we're all being honest everyone likes to be listened to and acknowledged. It gives me the opportunity to just vent about everything going on in my everyday life and discuss topics that people around me can relate to.
Of course, I love it when my articles get shared, but for me, writing for the Odyssey is more about giving myself the opportunity to take a step back and let the words flow. One of the best feelings I experience when my articles are being shared is the feeling that the people who shared it can relate somehow. I was able to relate to them, and share emotions with the reader. How cool is that?
Sure, writing for the Odyssey is another thing to add to my already ungodly, long list of things to do, but the doors that it opens make it so worth it. As a writer, this position is another job to add to my resume. Plus, it's really fun and we have an awesome team at Armstrong.
If you're considering writing for the Odyssey, I strongly suggest you take the first step and apply!
