So what is the big deal with writing for Odyssey?
I've been asked multiple times by friends, family, and even by some that have had the chance to read some of my articles. There is no easy way to describe the opportunity that I've been given with writing for Odyssey, but I can say that the experience will be one that I won't forget. Writing for Odyssey has been a stressful and overwhelming at times, but to remember most, the experience I am receiving will be unforgettable and is so rewarding.
I knew about the Odyssey long before I came to Mississippi State University, but I never talked to anyone about writing for the Odyssey. I was extremely interested in joining it and received the perfect opportunity when the Odyssey for MSU followed me on Instagram. When I heard that at MSU their was a chapter involved, I contacted the creators immediately. I have always loved reading and wanted to write, I felt that it's important to get as much experience as possible with writing in order to build necessary experience. I had a few internships and wrote freely on my own, but I had never been a part of a consistent publication. I had no idea what to expect, but seeing the love that the community had for each other helped me know that I was ready to join this community.
When I applied for a writing position in July, I had no idea what I was getting myself into. Since the Odyssey had been established quite well through the internet, I thought I wouldn't be good enough to be accepted as a writer. I felt that I was not experienced enough to write at their level. I remember receiving the news that I had been accepted as a writer and immediately ran down stairs to share the good news with my family. Talking to Shelby and Amelia helped me get the hang of the ropes and I was immediately thrown into a world of writing prompts, sticking with due dates, and constantly sharing articles on social media. I needed a new article idea by the end of every Tuesday and needed to submit the article by Thursday. My excitement turned into anxiety as I wondered how on earth I would be able to keep up with all the writing when I was back at school.
