We live in a world that allows celebrities to be elected into political office easier than incumbent politicians. This is a fact just proven in Knox County when Glenn Jacobs was elected mayor on August 2nd. The previous mayor, Tim Burchett, chose to run for Congress giving Jacobs an opportunity to get out of his wrestling career as 'Kane' and step in as a local politician.
Jacobs is very focused on the Knoxville economy and will be sworn in on September 1st, 2018. Some people are rejoicing at his victory and some are not. As someone who has lived in Knoxville for 20 years here is my opinion on the situation. He is a celebrity and owner of an insurance and realty company here in Knoxville. He has not officially "left the ring", but I think we can assume (or hope) he will not be wrestling during his time serving as mayor. While I do not know that letting people with zero political experience or education in an official position is the best idea, I also do not know that Knox County had a better option. I personally was not "wowed" by anyone during the primaries or his opposition.
From what this mayor-elect says, Jacobs is going to try to focus in on the infrastructure of Tennessee after our last winter utterly tore up our interstates and try to stabilize the Knox County economy the best he can. His other major concerns are the growing opioid epidemic and bettering our education system. Even if he does not do anything in his term at least Knox County is making the national news now!
If you are reading through this wondering why you should care I am here to remind you of things a county mayor can do. His main role is to manage fiscal duties for the county. Without a county mayor, there is no one to make sure the county has money for local projects. The mayor also serves as an advisor for each committee of the local legislature. The mayor is also responsible for development and utilities in the county. So while the county mayor position may not seem super important having a competent leader in this role is something necessary for the well-being of the community.
All in all, Glenn Jacobs will serve his term as our mayor and we will see how well he does. Learn more about county mayor positions and stay educated for the elections!
