The first organ donation dates back to 1668. Organs can be harvested from both a live or dead person. While some may feel a little grossed out or frightened by the thought of giving away their organs I would urge them to take themselves out of the matter.
Many are unsure of how to become a donor, don't think to become one because their friends are not one, or it seems like a distant topic. I was listening to a podcast the other day that went into the process of harvesting organs from a deceased human being. The process was quite critical, meticulous, and magical. Even if one small thing goes wrong or surgeons wait seconds too long the organ being transplanted could go to waste.
There are specific requirements to be a recipient, so you can be sure that your organs are not going to waste and there are people that wait years and years for the opportunity to get a working organ. They face great risks to receive an organ.
We should consider how special this is. By living such a way that you house healthy and strong organs, they can be used to give life to another human. Life people, life! You could be the reason someone is able to breathe, the reason someone else's body is able to function. Why let your body go to waste? Why would you not want to extend someone else's life?
Even if you are not wanting to be a live organ donor, consider becoming a donor so that when you have passed your organs will not go to waste. It is a simple process to become one. You go to your local DMV and request to be an organ donor, and they will send you a new ID card identifying you as such.
From a personal stand point on this matter, I felt that being a Christ follower I should be an organ donor. I felt convicted of this a few months ago, so I went to the DMV and requested a new license with the alert that I am an organ donor. Not gonna lie, it felt good. As I said previous, I think that having the love of God within can be demonstrated through this act of being an organ donor.
Although hard to swallow, the fact that someone else can live on, or simply live a happier life because I have passed, is humbling. Life is so precious, while losing it can be an awful event, acquiring it because of another's selflessness is beautiful.
