There has been a debate for some time now if congress and the house should have term limits like the president does. Congress is filled with people that have been in office for over 30 years, And everyone has their own thoughts on this topic.
Members of the House of Representatives are elected for two years at a time, but they can serve unlimited terms if they are reelected, members of the Senate are elected for six years and can also serve unlimited terms if reelected.
When it comes to the president they can only serve two terms, and this is under the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution, which reads in part: "No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice." So why doesn't this apply to the House and Congress?
People that are in favor of term limits argue that restricting the service of lawmakers prevents politicians from amassing too much power in Washington.
politic problems in Washington run deep, and there is no getting away from every problem. But having term limits can offer at least have a partial remedy to this problem. Term limits prevent politicians from spending 30-60 years in office where their age can have an impact on the newer generation.
In 2017 Senator Ted Cruz and Francis Rooney (R-Fla.) proposed an amendment to the Constitution that would set term limits on members of Congress. "For too long, members of Congress have abused their power and ignored the will of the American people," Cruz said in a news release.
U.S. senators would be limited to two six-year terms and members of the U.S. House of Representatives would be capped at three two-year terms. There are people that argue that having such short terms could affect the economy because everyone thinks differently and can have a radical impact.
And you could be getting rid of a great politician if they are serving 30 or more years that they must be doing something right. The next person to take their spot could have a different mindset and make everything worse. Even though it would remove some of the corruption threats that seem to constantly exist in Washington.
At the same time, term limits would also change how people form relationships with other representatives. The change in representatives every 2-6 years would have everyone rebuilding relationships with different people, that they don't know and may think differently.
But the Pro to this could push them to pursue and possibly pass a law that would help our country like immigration and gun control laws, and try to make a difference and not just waste money.
Congress is in dismay right now and their focus is only on the president when they should be focusing on more important matters. and we desperately need new ideas, procedures, and influence.
The people that are in office right now have so much money and have big-money campaign contributors usually direct their efforts at those in power, making it difficult for a new candidate to get off the ground. And these new candidates could have better ideas.
More time in office means more power, and this leads to the corruption of the government.
If we had term limits, this would give a fresh perspective about our governing system, it can force both sides to work together instead of against each other, and maybe even make our country a little better than it is right now.
