You Are Worth It

"Self love, self respect, self worth. There is a reason they all start with 'self.' You cannot find them in anyone else.”

Self-worth and self-love: Something most of us in this world have struggled or are struggling with. If you are anything like me, a big part of your journey in life has been all about learning how to love yourself and how to achieve self-validation. And the biggest mistake we tend to make is having our self-value be dependent on other people and materialistic things. In the end, though, we fall apart and break out of disappointment, because the truth is that is what causing us so much pain. Instead of looking for our self-worth in other people, we need to realize that learning how to love every bit and piece of you does not come from other people's opinion of you, but from inside of you.

Time and time again we all wonder and question "what's my purpose in life? Am I even worth the oxygen we breathe?" For those of you who struggle with depression or have ever had suicidal thoughts, you are worth it! You are meant to be living for a reason, and you're more valuable than you thought you ever could be.

It is definitely a battle to realize your self-worth. I struggle with it daily, but throughout my fight, I have learned some positive things to help make it a bit easier. Here is what I learned:

1. Always focus on yourself, and never compare yourself to others.

It is degrading and will frankly take away the attention needed to improving yourself.

2. You are not perfect, nobody is, so don't try to be.

Everyone can always improve on their life and that is nothing to be ashamed of.

3. Surround yourself with people who respect you and want the best for you.

Realize to let go of people who don't add positive value to your life, and surround yourself with people who want to push you to become the best person you can possibly be.

4. You have the right to do anything you want to do and be anything you want to be.

Remember your life and happiness belongs to you and nobody else.

5. Love yourself.

Love yourself with every ounce of strength you have.

I have realized that through time the path to loving yourself and realizing your worth is a journey and path everyone has to take. Although at times it might not be the easiest thing to do, it is one of the best things to do. Loving yourself has to be the single most important thing in life, without it, we cannot accomplish much. “Self-love, self-respect, self-worth. There is a reason they all start with 'self.' You cannot find them in anyone else.”

I just want you to know that no matter what life throws at you that you are worth it. Life doesn’t always go the way that you planned and that is okay! It surely is not easy. There will be good days, and there will be not so good days. Some days you just have to create your own sunshine, and that’s okay. I’m rooting for you. The world is rooting for you. You can do this.

Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
