11 Worst Things That Always Happen On The First Day Of Class

If your first day of classes goes anything like this, you're going to want spring break ASAP.

You may start to think at some point during winter break, "I can't wait to get back to school." That sentence roughly translates to,"I am ready to see my friends again, but I really don't want to go to class." Whether we like it or not, syllabus week is here. At least seven out of the ten things on this list are almost guaranteed to happen to you on the first day of classes. But just look on the bright side, you probably won't remember how annoying the first day was when you're stressing over midterms.

1. You didn’t want to get to class late on the first day and make a bad impression, so you got there way too early.

All I can say is, good thing I charged my phone to 100% before coming to class.

2. You see a professor walking down the hall who you’ve had before, but you’re not sure if he/she will remember you or not.

Do I wave or look down? Quick, just act like you got a text!

3. You see people in the classroom that you’ve had classes with but don’t really know.

“Hey, how was your break? How did you do in *insert previous class here*?” Cue the awkward silence until class starts.

4. The professor pronounces your name wrong during attendance and everyone whips their heads around to look at you.

Happens. Every. Time.

5. You find out the textbook is required, and the professor warns about how you probably won't be able to pass the course without buying it.

There goes the money I could have spent at Panera every day for the next two weeks.

6. The professor says there will be group projects.

Here come the flashbacks from last semester’s train wreck of a group project.

7. You pick a seat that you just don’t vibe with.

Am I going to be stuck in this unassigned assigned seat for the whole semester?

8. The class ends after like, 13 minutes.

Well, that wasn’t a waste of time at all.

10. The professor actually starts lecturing and the class goes for the full 50 minutes.

I am not going to remember this material, but okay.

11. One word: Icebreakers.

I LITERALLY CANNOT THINK OF SOMETHING INTERESTING ABOUT MYSELF. Please start on the opposite side of the room, please!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
