10 One-Liners You've Heard Hundreds Of Times If You Work Retail Sales

Almost everyone has had at least a little experience in sales. Whether it be a clothing store, grocery store, pet store, or anything else, you always have those customers that make you question why you came in that shift. And no, it's not always an odd/bad job. Working in sales definitely has its ups and downs. Whether it's been a horrible or an amazing shift, I can guarantee you've heard at least some of these ten things between the time you clocked in and when your shift ends.

Here are ten things you only hear working in sales:

1. "If there's no price tag, it means it's free, right?"

Bonus points if the customer has the biggest, cheesiest grin in the world. No, it is not free. Sometimes we're in the middle of re-pricing, we don't put a sticker on the item, or the tag may have just fallen off. And no, you are not the first customer that has run up to the counter with said item waving it around asking that.

2. "Is this really this price? That's expensive/cheap!!"

You always hit or miss with this one. Either a customer comes in, finds the item they want, and can't believe the price because they expected it to be much higher. That makes for a happy customer and an easy sale. On the flip side, you have the customers that see a price and cannot believe the store would charge so much. Then, you have to start explaining what it is, and why it's priced the way it is.

3. "My, you're here so often! Do you live here?"

Yes, Janet. My bed is in the stockroom and the sound of the warehouse building air conditioner soothes me back to sleep nightly. I know I'm here often, but no, I don't live here. And please don't say that too loud, they might start taking rent out of my paychecks.

4. "Do you have any coupons or discounts you can give me?"

Unfortunately, no. I barely even get a discount and I work here. *Insert customer sigh, wearily taking out their credit card to finish their payment.*

5. "My kid ripped this off the shelf/display and now it's broken. Can they just play with it until I'm done shopping?"

Yeah, sure, if you're buying it afterward. this is honestly one of my biggest pet peeves. Don't get me wrong, I love little kids. However, we take time building our displays with products we actually need to be selling. We can't afford to have broken ones. Letting your child run around aimlessly grabbing at the things in our store isn't really the smartest idea...

6. "This is my favorite store to shop in!"

Ah, one of the best things to hear. Among all the distress, this is how you know you and your team are doing a great job and making people feel welcomed enough to come back.

7. "I get discounts, the manager *insert half correct name here* lets me have them when I'm here."

Considering you haven't even said their name right, I don't believe this is correct. A lot of times customers will try to target the newer workers or try to say this on a day they know that manager won't be there. However, odds are, they've seen that manager once and only exchanged a hello.

8. "What time do you open/close?"

The hours of the store are forever burned into my brain. I could probably recite them in my sleep. The amount of calls you get with only that question is crazy. I mean really people...We do have a website.

9. "I'm going to be calling corporate."

A rare one, but still a great one. I always get a great laugh out of this one. Chances are, the customer was taking advantage of the idea that "the customer is always right" and trying to get one up on us. I'm all for reasoning and being fair, but sometimes we can't take expired coupons, change prices for nothing, or change the way our store is managed. But go ahead, call corporate, after all, their rules are the ones we're enforcing on you.

10. "Hey, your shift is over, you can clock out."

Said by a manager at the end of the day, this is the most heavenly thing you can hear after being so busy. Suddenly you're on cloud nine and the time-stamp machine looks like a beautiful light at the end of the tunnel.

And there you have it, ten things you'll only (definitely) hear when working in sales. I love working in sales, and as much as these things are said, this article is most certainly written only in good fun. Hopefully some of you can laugh with me and remember a time where you heard these things said.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
