For some people the summer is for hanging out with friends, going to the beach, traveling, vacationing and really just having a good time. It's a way to catch a break from school before classes start back up again and you're consumed by the amount of work that you have to do. For others, summer is for working to pay for things like school, textbooks and maybe even saving up for a car, that new phone you want, or just saving in general. I spent my summer working at my college and I have absolutely no regrets. Some people may question it since I didn't take classes but it was the best decision I've made.
I made the choice and took the opportunity to continue my tour guide position at my college, the University of Delaware, for the entire summer. This wasn't a three time per week job either, this was a job that required me to give tours every single day to 50-100 people. My break was on the weekends where I caught up on my sleep, went to the beach and even caught up on my TV shows. Even though it may sound like complaining, working this summer was a perfect choice for me. Some people take classes to graduate early, catch up in a major or even a minor. I decided I would save money to be able to take winter classes to knock off some easy courses as well as being able to pay for my textbooks this semester. In my opinion, there's nothing wrong with working because most people do anyways!
Being on your college campus for an entire summer may not be the best for everyone. Most people want to get away from school as quickly as possible, but I took this as an opportunity to explore and find potential study spots, eat at new restaurants and work closely with the office of admissions supervisors to improve as a tour guide.
There's nothing wrong with doing things during the summer that aren't vacationing during the normal week days, especially when you're a young college student. Working and taking classes should be encouraged for more kids! On most weekends I would go down to the beach and relax, catch up on sleep and have some nice spa days for myself. It gave me the sense of accomplishment to be satisfied with my busy work schedule. There were some days when I definitely wish that I didn't work so often so I could hang out with my friends and go to other states with them, but I would never take back the decision I made to work.
All the steps I took and the hours I worked towards my independence and my future career made it all twenty times better to think about. With school starting next week and me being done my job for now, I'm definitely going to be spending some time doing things I didn't have the time to do in one weekend!
