I'll take action and heroes any day over romcoms. Superhero movies are some of my absolute favorite movies so, of course, I went to see "Wonder Woman" opening weekend. I will admit that I was a bit skeptical going in as Gal Gadot/Wonder Woman did not impress me much in her debut in "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" but oh my gosh I absolutely loved "Wonder Woman." It stayed true to who Wonder Woman is and told her amazing journey from princess to hero.
I have read many articles saying that the movie was good but not as good as other movies that came out this year such as "Logan" or "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2." Now, I will admit that I didn't see "Logan" but I did see "Guardians" and let's just say I was not impressed. So to compare the two and say that "Guardians" is better than "Wonder Woman" is just mind boggling, did we even see the same movies?
But back to my point. There is so much to love about this film. It was set in a flashback which had a great transition. Instead of just starting from where the picture was taken we get to see Diana's full backstory. The setting, especially Themiscyra, was great. The costumes, the acting, the accents, everything was on point. While the film takes place during World War I, there were plenty of little moments of humor that really made it even greater. It's not nearly as dark as "Batman Vs. Superman" which is perfect because Wonder Woman herself is not a dark character. On top of the humor, there was a fair amount of social commentary. For example, upon meeting Steve's secretary Etta, Diana equates secretaries to slaves and while this is played off as humorous it strikes a chord. Then later when Diana asks the Chief what happened to his people, the very blunt answer he gives shows Diana a side of Steve (and the side she has chosen to fight for) that she had not seen before.
My favorite part of the whole film is Themiscyra. From the badass Amazonian woman to the beautifully choreographed training and fight scenes to the beauty of the island itself, it was everything I could have dreamed of.
Hands down, this is my favorite movie of the year and I cannot wait for more.
