Women vs. Men: A Trip to the Gym

Women vs. Men: A Trip to the Gym

Going to the gym is a must for a huge amount of college students. You see all kinds of people in the gym. There is the girl with her boyfriend who angrily looks around to make sure no one is looking at her. There are the guys who have the common disease that most newbies at the gym acquire after two days of working out: Imaginary Lat Syndrome (ILS). This is when guys think their Latissimus Dorsi muscles are way bigger than they actually are, so they walk around with their arms out like they cannot bring them in any closer. And finally, there are just the regular men and women who do not have any distinguishing characteristics about them.

The gym is the easy part. Getting these people to the gym is the hard part. We all know that one girl who just cannot go to the gym without making sure every single part of her looks good. For some girls, their preparation to go to the gym is more of a warm-up than actually running on the treadmill beforehand. Now I completely understand that not all girls are like that. The girls who are not like that can be split up into three categories. The first category is that they are with their boyfriend at the gym and cannot make it seem like she wants the attention. The second category is the girls who go with three or four of their closest friends and mutually decide beforehand that either they are all going to look good or they are all going to look bad. Pointless, yet girls still do it. The last category would just simply be the girls who do not care and wear the first thing they see, whether it be yoga pants or her pajamas from last night's casual wine night.

Girls may have a complicated routine to do before their trip to the gym, but most guys have the same agenda every time. They drink their pre-workout, get dressed depending on which muscle they are working out (I am guilty of this), and go on their way. Pre-workout is a must for most men who go to the gym. If I'm halfway to the gym and realize I forgot to take my pre-workout, the world stops spinning for a minute until I decide whether or not I should still work out. It is a huge deal. Our shirt definitely shows which muscle we are working out. The stringer shirts that pretty much show our whole back are the ones we typically use on back and bicep day, for example. Finally, the ride there is the fun part. We blare music that gets us psyched for the gym. We think about what we are going to do the second we walk into the gym. This is especially necessary on leg day because it takes a lot of motivation to be "excited" for leg day.

As you can see, there is a huge difference between the male and female minds when it comes to going to the gym. Preparation is funny, but I could go on and on about the actual gym experience and the different kinds of people there.

Just remember, we are all at the gym for the same purpose. No matter how long it took you to get to the gym, you ended up going and that is the important part!

The Daily Struggles of Being a College Commuter

It's not all morning coffees and singing along to the radio.

The Daily Struggles of Being a College Commuter

I've been in college for four years now. I spent half my time as a commuter and half as a resident so I've experienced both sides of the housing spectrum. One thing I've learned comparing the two is that my struggles as a commuter far outweigh anything I went through while living on campus. Commuters have to deal with the problems school brings along with a slew of other issues; I've filled up my gas tank in the worst kind of weather conditions and napped in random places in public more times than I'm proud to say of. This is a list of some of the most challenging aspects of being a commuter.
