Women have always been inspiring, but because the past has seemed to favor men it has been hard for their stories to become the stuff of legends. Several women have been lost in the past, and it is time to make their stories known. These women are inspiring, and challenge others to try something new.
Emmeline Pankhurst
Emmeline Pankhurst was a British suffragette who advocated for voting rights. She was arrested several times for fighting for her beliefs. In 1903, she founded Women's Social and Political Union whose unions were the first to be considered suffragettes. Emmeline died shortly after her goal was reached: equal voting rights.
Hedy Lamarr
Hedy Lamarr had it all. She was beautiful, but that is not all she was. She was a famous actress and starred in several movies. Not only was Lamarr a successful actress she also invented a communication system that could be used to intercept radio waves. The invention paved the way for new inventions of today like the GPS and Wi-Fi.
Indira Gandhi
Indira Gandhi was the first and only prime minister of India. Her father was the first prime minister of India. As one of the major female leaders in the 20th century, she became a very impactful leader, and changed the world around her.
Tarana Burke
Tarana Burke founded the #MeToo movement in 2006. The movement has become a huge part of American society in the last few years. Burke's movement has empowered survivors to speak out about sexual assault and has started a conversation about how we treat survivors.
These women have shown us how to go out and make a difference in the world, and now it is your turn. We must begin to honor these women by getting their stories out there. To become better, we need to take a note from these women and step out and make a change.
