When I woke up on Saturday, May 19th at 5 a.m., I was so excited and pumped for the Royal Wedding, as if I was the lucky girl about to be wed to Prince Harry. However, it was American actress Meghan Markle who wed with the man sixth-in-line to the throne.
As Meghan Markle stepped out of the dark mahogany-colored Rolls Royce, my heart stopped and my jaw dropped.
And the adorable page boy's reaction was precisely how I felt about Meghan's wedding look.
She wore a Givenchy dress designed by Clare Waight Keller, with an off-the-shoulder bodice, slim-fitting silhouette, and a cathedral-length tulle veil. It was nothing short of worthy of the occasion as she gracefully walked up the steps of St. George's Chapel in Windsor Castle.
But as the world turned their critical gaze towards the event of the year, many criticized the royal wedding dress for being too underwhelming and simple. Wedding watchers stormed to social media, with Twitter users "boring," "ill-fitting," and plain." Even Katy Perry's remarks went viral online, as she stated that Meghan Markle's dress needed "one more fitting" before the big day.
Since her royal engagement in November 2017, the now Duchess of Sussex was a fashion icon, with her effortlessly-perfect messy bun and her impeccable outfit choices. But after her nuptials to Prince Harry, women online turned critical of her wedding dress. How can they be so judgemental of our American princess when she is ACTUAL goals?
I mean LOOK AT THEM!!! DIDN'T THIS PICTURE SAVE YOUR LIFE???
Being biracial, with her mother being African-American and her father being white, Meghan Markle is possibly making history by being the first mixed-race royal of the British family.
She is #PrincessGoals. Enough said.
Along with her potential of making history, people are noting what her new position as Duchess of Sussex could represent, as she has been very vocal in the past about her beliefs. Meghan has been a "female advocate" since a young age, and her work as a Duchess hopefully will continue her work for gender equality, being the embodiment of the "golden rule."
Once again, Meghan Markle is AMAZING.
She is princess goals, not just because she is possibly making history, doing wonderful humanitarian work, all while looking stunning on her special day as she married Prince Harry in front of the entire world. She is princess goals because she got to marry a man she loves and the man who loves her. There are people out there who can't find that special person in their lifetime, so when that special bond is broadcasted to the entire world, it should be celebrated.
It was her special day. She was marrying the love of her life, in a beautiful gown. She was glowing from the bright tiara on her head to the gorgeous heels that led her through the chapel to Prince Harry. There is no doubt that people will judge her based on what she wore. But there is also no doubt that was radiant. No one can change my mind. She is princess goals on a whole other level.
In a society where we are constantly battling the patriarchy, we as women don't need to be battling each other as well. We should celebrate Meghan Markle and not criticize her for her royal wedding dress. Nothing is accomplished if we judge each other based on our fashion choices. However, so much can be done if we treated each other the way we want to be treated.
If the Golden Rule is good enough for our princess, it should be good enough for us.
