Recently shows like "The Good Doctor" have been raising awareness about Autism and showing people that they can have successful lives and that they are capable of doing good. While yes I do love that show but it does make me wonder something, where is the respresentation of Autistic women?
Most shows that have characters with Autism are either men or children and I am like where are the women we matter too!
While shows like Girl Meets World and Sesame Street have had female characters with Autism there is still a long way to go. While yes more males have been diagnosed than females that doesnt make them any less valid.
Growing up I always knew I was different, and I would have loved someone that I could have looked up to, an autistic woman who is successful and would have had me thinking that if she can do it then so can I.
I am currently planning on writing a fictional story where the main character is on the spectrum and is also female. It will be a crime novel and I haven't decided if she will be an investigator or a lawyer yet. But I know it should give a positive role model for women with ASD out there.
I have also started a new thing for World Autism Awareness Day there is a lot of negative remarks about wearing blue because some people may think that its just representing the males, that is why I am encouraging people to wear pink as well to raise awareness of the females as well.
Hollywood needs more stories like this, I think Hollywood needs to take notes, even if its not on the big screen, even if its not on a major network, even if its on Netflix, Hulu, or even YouTube lets make more stories like this.
Women with Autism need more representation in the media, because this could be a role model that I could have used growing up, if I had someone like that to look up to maybe I would have been a different person.
The important thing that we have to do it show people that it does matter and we need a female character with Autism, because representation matters, Hollywood does an okay job with diversity but we can do better.
After all the future is female!
