A few weeks ago, my roommate brought up a very interesting thing that I have never thought twice about. Let me lay out the scenario...
A guy and girl are walking directly towards each other and someone has to move. More than likely, the girl will be the one to move.
When I was told this, I was first incredibly confused. Why is it that the girl always moves? Well, I took it upon myself to test out this statement.
The past few weeks, whenever I remembered and whenever the opportunity arose, I would walk towards a guy and not move. The results were rather interesting.
I got ran into.
A lot.
I’m not exaggerating at all here when I tell you the men on my college campus were not kind when it came to me walking into them.
The first time I did it, I got nervous because I knew there was going to be some shoulder contact. I could not believe that what my roommate said was actually true. All along I’ve been moving out of the way when I feel like it should be a mutual move.
I've probably done this several times the past few weeks, and every time I continue to walk towards them, they don't move and we end up either hitting shoulders or slightly grazing each others arms.
I recommend if you are a woman, and don’t believe me, to try it yourself and see it in real life that it is true. If you’re a man, I would suggest maybe try and be conscious of this next time this happens.
I'm not saying all women should now plow into every man they see because they won't move for them, but I'm just trying to make a point that most men don't move.
I don't know if it's some underlying issue, a sexist issue, or a privileged issue, but what I do know is that it is a thing and it's strange.
So, men and women, next time you're walking directly at someone, see what happens.
Just don't smash into each other, because it doesn't feel good.
