Yes, the title says all. I don't need to do any explaining, you are here to read what exactly what you think. I am attempting to qualify to for the US Open for the first time ever in my golf career.
Close to ten thousand golfers attempt to qualify every single year, and there are only 155 people in the field. So you might be asking yourself, how does even the qualification process for the U.S. Open work? I have your answer because I am going through with this as we speak.
If you have never tried to qualify for the US Open before, you're in luck, you too can try to qualify for it. For amateurs, as long as you have a handicap of 1.4 or lower, you're in the clear to attempt to qualify. Any professional golfers not exempt can also qualify through the local qualifying process.
Now we have to talk about exemptions. Exemptions is essentially a fast pass that allows you to skip certain stages of U.S. Open qualifying. A lot of PGA Tour pros and others with tour status most likely get to skip local qualifying and get to go straight into sectional qualifying. The U.S. Open has 15 different possible exemptions that allow you to bypass qualifying and go straight in the U.S. Open, this can range anywhere from past champions from the last decade, the Top 60 in the official world golf rankings (OWGR), and even the US Amateur winner gets one. Special exemptions are also given out, and who gets them is on a case by case basis.
So obviously, I do not have any status or exempt status anywhere considering I am still an amateur, which means I have to through local qualifying. Local qualifying is just one round of 18 holes, and depending on how many in the field are at the qualifying site, the lowest X amount of scores move on to sectional qualifying, which is easier said than done considering you're going against touring professionals, club professionals, and some of the best amateurs all over the world.
If you get past local qualifying, you are now at sectional qualifying, which is 36 holes in one day (Yes, that is a lot of golf). Keep in mind, a lot of people are exempt from locals and they are already at sectionals. You'll see a bunch of seasoned veterans in this spot attempting to get into probably the toughest golf tournament in North America to try and qualify for. From there, once again, the lowest scores, depending on how many are in the field, get into the U.S. Open. Not so tough on paper, but very tough in practice.
I will be attempting this three weeks from now, and I am preparing as much as I can. I never know if I am ready for it or not unless I try, so I am going to do my best effort into this, and whatever happens, happens. It only takes one good round of golf to change someone's life, and hell, it could happen to me too.
