Why You Should Treat Yourself

The end of the holiday season is fast approaching, which means the season of “it’s better to give than receive” is ending with it. Your bank account is sad, decorations are being packed away and soon enough, school will be back in session. So, before you take on an extra shift at work, volunteer to babysit your annoying neighbor or order your textbooks for next semester, you should treat yourself.

With the hustle and bustle of the semester and obligations alike, it's easy to forget that the most important person in your life is yourself. The sad truth is, it comes with the territory of "growing up." It’s not about what you want anymore, it’s about what you need. That’s not a bad thing, though. Being able to get your priorities in order is a must needed skill but sometimes, it’s okay to do what you want and not what you need. It’s okay to treat yourself. It’s actually a very healthy thing to do. And you deserve it.

Buy concert tickets. Buy the new Call of Duty. Buy a new pair of shoes. Take a three hour nap.

Buy a new book. Get a massage. Buy some new clothes. Bake some chocolate chip cookies and pour yourself a tall glass of milk.

Treat yourself to something that’s going to make you happy. It doesn’t have to be something big. It could be cupcakes from your favorite bakery or new socks. It doesn't even have to be material. Maybe it’s staying in for the entire weekend, catching up on your favorite TV shows and just having some time to yourself. If it makes you happy, relieves some stress and makes you feel good, do it.

It may sound corny, but your happiness should be your number one priority. It's essential for your mind, body and soul. You have mountains of homework. You are running on four hours of sleep. You miss home. You feel pressure to find an internship. Maybe, you just feel a little bit down and out. Stop brushing it under the rug. Put yourself first. TREAT YO SELF. Extend that one hour nap to two hours. Buy those tickets to the Rangers game. Get a manicure and a pedicure. It doesn't matter what it is, if it puts a smile on your face then mission accomplished, you just treated yourself.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
