Thursday night, I got the opportunity to see Katy Perry live in concert. I’m a Katy Cat, so the idea of going late on a weekday to a three and a half hour concert still seemed to appeal to me.
First off, I sometimes skip the opener, but I was interested in seeing Noah Cyrus perform. She sang about five songs and kept it short and sweet. However, the light show going on behind her was more impressive than her singing.
The lyrics were almost unrecognizable and each tune seemed only a slight variation of one another. There was a cool drum set and drummer backing her up, though, that stole the show. Each time the drum was hit, the geometric shapes on the outside would correspond with the different drum pieces and light up.
There was about a half an hour to fourty five minute wait between the opener and main act. During this time, a huge projection of an eye blinked realisticly over the stage in anticipation of the coming show. Then Katy made her grand entrance rfloating through the air on a star shaped planet.
Every song after that we’re classics like Teenage Dream, Last Friday Night, complete with huge flamingos, Roar, with a moving lion head, Firework, with a firework show projection, And many others. Several costume changes also ensued, one including a dress and headpiece made of genuine diamonds.
Katy had amazing theatrics and props. The backup dancers and singers were also incredible. At one point a male dancer came out and was performing some contortion and flexibility acts, while yet another was swinging around and up a pole shaped as a rose.
Above all, Perry is a wonderful person. She connected wonderfully with the crowd and was very open. Using a comically oversized phone, the singer called her mom to make sure she wasn’t okay sense there are wild fires around where she lives. A man was picked to come on stage and face off one on one against her for a basketball match before performing Swish Swish.
A little girl with crutches was also carried onto stage to get a picture and make a wish upon a floating star (that Katy was previously floating around the room on). The injured girl proceeded to find out her phone had died! So her mother passed down her own phone through the crowd so that the selfie was still possible with the pop star.
I would most definitely go to see another Katy Perry concert if she returns to Detroit or Grand Rapids. I give her use of stage, bold acts (floating around the room, and doing the splits in front of thousands of people), props, and overall kindness an A+.
