As the new school year has arrived, there are so many new clubs and opportunities that are opening up for those around them. Especially for freshmen that are trying to be involved on campus. My advice to anyone is to get involved with as much as you can and if you have a passion for writing I suggest you think about joining your campus' Odyssey group!
Here's why...
If you are a journalism major, creative writing major, English major, or someone that just loves to write, this is perfect for you! You have a completely free range when you write for Odyssey! You can write about politics, to music, to a listicle about the best Spongebob quotes. If you get stuck and can't think about what to write, the editors and other members of your team will help you figure it out! Your work will never been patronized and it is the coolest feeling to see your work published!
That being said, if one of your pieces becomes really popular, it can be spread all over social media! A few listicles that I have written were big hits and it is great to see people sharing them on Facebook and having a positive reaction to them. Since you ideally have to write one article a week, some may not be as popular as the last and that's okay! The editors and social media person will help you create articles that will get views!
Joining Odyssey is a easy way for people to be involved on campus. If you are shy and don't want to be in a big group of people, this group is for you. The main form of communication is through text and you can express yourself through your words. Every Odyssey group may be different based on who you are writing for, but as someone that writes for Endicott, everyone is so nice and this isn't something that is a huge commitment.
Like committing to any group however, you need to be dedicated. It may seem like a lot to have one article a week but it's not. Just plan ahead and you will get it done. We always say that communication is key so if you can't get a piece in for that week, just let the editors know. As long as you put in your best effort and make the deadlines as much as you can, you'll do great.
So if you are a freshman, senior, or a transfer student looking to express themselves or to get involved on campus, this is the group for you!
