"Younger" is a TV show that is currently airing on "TV land" and it has been on since the Spring of 2015. The show is one of the first scripted tv shows that I got into on my own. I have watched a lot of scripted shows, all of which I got into because of my family or friends, but this is one that I got interested in without the influence of anyone else. I got into the show because it started airing during the perfect time for me; I was at the end of my freshman year of college. I was coming into myself as an adult, I was 18 turning 19, and I was having a positive break-through personally and emotionally after hellish previous months. When I first saw the trailers for the show on TV, a lot of things appealed to me. One of the first things was the fact that the show was set in New York City and as a proud New Yorker, it was great to see a show that was set in New York and also actually filmed in New York.
Another thing that helped me really enjoy the show was the fact that the backdrop is a publishing company and has to do with writing. I always loved writing, but my skills really became refined during 2015, and I feel like it was something I could relate to because I love writing and the show immediately felt relatable. 2015 was the year I really began focusing on writing and I even took a creative writing class and begin taking part in literary magazines on my college campus. The cool thing was we discussed it an an upper level English class of mine almost a year back, because a lot of people in my class (including my awesome professor) loved the show and loved the backdrop of writing and publishing.
Another thing that helped draw me to the show was the characters. The fact that Hilary Duff was a major part of the show definitely helped draw me in! Everyone I've ever met in my age group loves Hilary Duff, including me. She is a role-model to my generation, she has always been successful in her career, and her personal life has always been very well-put together as well. Her character on the show Kelsey, who is a young and successful woman that occasionally still has moments where she freaks out and gets nervous. But what makes her most relatable is that she's still human and getting her life together. She's not perfect and that's what makes her feel so real.
Another thing about the show that I really think is great is the fashion and aesthetic of the show. Each character has there own style and fashion sense. For example, the character Josh (who is played by Nico Tortorella) has a really cool sense of style and dresses how a lot of the guys in my age group (early to mid twenties) do. Josh wears cool outfits. but there also outfits you can actually take inspiration from and buy yourself so you can put them together. Same thing with Hilary Duff's character Kelsey. she dresses very cool, but her style seems affordable and realistic. The characters aren't wearing three thousand dollar-outfits most of us can't afford, but wear things we could see in a store we typically shop in and can afford.
Another aspect that makes the show relatable is the fact that not one of the characters is "perfect." Each of them have a flaw or some kind of imperfection. That's why so many people my age like the show--because the reality is no one is perfect ,we all have issues and imperfections. I feel like my generation (millennials) work to embrace all of our flaws and imperfections. Many of us realize that we're not perfect, and it's okay for us not to try and be perfect. "Younger" is the same way, and this is probably my favorite thing about it. This show teaches you to embrace your imperfections and realize your not perfect, but it's still okay. The show is great because I often watch it with my mom, and even my brother will watch it with me once in a while. Overall, it's a show that we all can find something relatable in.
