Unless you have been living under a rock these past few months, you have probably at least heard of "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel." I recently finished the first season (over the span of two evenings) and let me tell you, it is everything I needed in a show. Unfortunately, you can’t watch it without an Amazon Prime membership, so steal (I mean borrow) login info from your friend with a subscription because, damn, is it worth it.
The show follows young housewife Miriam (Midge) Maisel in 1950s NYC. Maybe you’re rolling your eyes at that, like ANOTHER sexist show set in 1950s America, but hang in there friend. Things quickly take a turn for young Midge, but I’m not going to be one of those people who spoils it for you.
This show is full of powerful women taking a stand (in their own way) against the societal expectations of the 1950s. Challenging stereotypes, gender issues, and race issues all along the way.
More than that, "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" is an incredibly entertaining show with an amazing cast. It’s dramatic, emotional, raunchy, political, and spicy all at once. Basically, it’s like if "Legally Blonde" and "Mad Men" had a baby.
Watch this if you or someone you know always talks about how relationships were so much more pure and romantic in the 50s. Then you can laugh about how exactly the same sort of stuff was happening back then, but nobody was talking about it. And, if there were smartphones in the 1950s, you can bet Joel would be sending out d*ck pics to Penny Pan but that’s a whole other thing.
Watch this if you can’t get into "Mad Men" because of all of the sexist BS and business men all over the place. Watch this if you’re tired of shows that seem to revolve around a female character drooling all over some man that isn’t even worth her time.
*cough* it won 2 golden globes *cough*
Watch this if you need a binge you won’t feel too guilty about. There is one season, eight episodes, and they’re all between 45 minutes to an hour, so do the math... that isn’t even that bad. Way less time consuming than my usual Netflix binging shame spirals. You can catch up before season two drops, whenever that is.
