The conversation began with a casual, "Gaby, why do we need to save the bees?" As an environmentalist who is very passionate about all creatures, bees especially, she offered many reasons.
For starters, no bees means no more humans. Bees are our number one pollinators, and without them, we couldn't grow food. Albert Einstein said that without bees, humans could last four years. FOUR. YEARS. As Colon says, "our planet cannot sustain the level of destruction."
So if losing the bees is really that bad, what can we do to save them besides retweet articles put out by awareness campaigns? Colon says, "stop using pesticides, stop supporting companies that use pesticides, stop consuming bee products: bee wax honey, pollen, etc, plant bee friendly gardens." It's important to take action; even doing something little can have a big impact - much like the little bees have the impact on us. She explained that the bees are dying because of companies that use heavy pesticides; their colonies collapse - frankly, the chemicals are killing them. In addition, large honey and bees' wax companies overuse the creatures, which increases the demand for them.
Some advice for those that want to do something about it: Colon says buy organic. "It doesn't have to be expensive if you search locally," and do not support companies owned by Monsanto They are the one of the biggest contributors in the bee massacre.
Scared of bees? Colon reminds us that they are just little and they're just there to pollinate and mind their own business. It is unlikely they'll sting you if they have no reason to. So once again, let's take some action in saving our black and yellow friends because ultimately without bees equals without humans.
