Whether you're a freshman considering rush in the fall, or a non-affiliated student wondering about what the big deal is with going Greek, I can honestly tell you that going Greek has changed the lives of so many at this university. Being Greek opens the doors to do so many awesome opportunities!
The first semester of freshman year I know is beyond hectic. From learning where your classes are to missing your family and adjusting to a new lifestyle, it is difficult to consider adding recruitment and Greek life. Being in school, it seems more and more like Greek life isn't needed. I know Greek life isn't for everyone. However, I encourage anyone to consider the process of finding an eternal brotherhood or sisterhood.
Why should you go Greek? Here is my little list of reasons why you should go Greek.
You'll have additional housing options after freshman year.
While many learn the enormous pleasures known as Wallace or student housing, many avoid the nightmare all together. Dorms only last through freshman year people!
You become a part of lifelong tradition.
While University of Idaho boasts many traditions such as Serpentine or Mom's Weekend, Greeks have many of our own. From Greek Week to secret rituals each house individually has, they are not only bad ass, they're things you get to look back on.
You gain incredible social skills and make friendships that are lifelong.
One of the biggest reasons many join Greek life is to meet new people. Through joining a Greek organization, you get the opportunity to meet so many people, not only in your chapter, but outside as well.
If you are intimidated by public speaking, or consider yourself anti-social, your fears of interaction will soon be over after going Greek. You meet so many people, so quickly, socializing soon becomes easy with people from all backgrounds.
You'll probably have a higher G.P.A.
We are in college for one main reason... to go to school, and graduate. It's no secret that Greeks nationwide and specifically at the University of Idaho have a higher GPA, but we also have a higher chance to graduate. Awful at a certain subject? No worries, there is someone probably with that major in your house, and they're always more than happy to tutor you (for free).
You have more opportunities on your campus, which can help you after graduation.
There are so many opportunities to pursue a leadership role within your organization. With this responsibility, it pushes you to pursue even more for your future, and you learn to take initiative.
85 percent of Fortune 500 CEOs are Greek. Since 1825, all but two presidents have belonged to a Greek organization, and both female justices of the Supreme Court belonged to sororities. This is no coincidence.
You eat better.
While many learn what great food Bob's the campus dining facility has, Greeks are able to hire personal chefs. From breakfast on Fridays to pretty much whatever you want, it's clear to your stomach why you should go Greek.
You gain an amazing network and support group.
You’ll always have someone to sit in class with, to study with, to go to coffee with; the ability to socialize is endless. Feeling the love and support from other people besides your parents and family reminds you that you can do anything. Going Greek, you always have people to back you up.
Not only do you have your local chapter, but Greek organizations are recognized nationally! By joining a house you instantly have connections from all across the country.

You forever have a sisterhood or brotherhood (even after graduation).
By joining Greek life you make memories and follow traditions that last a lifetime. As an alumna or alumnus, you are able to look back on so much more in college. Above is a picture of pictures of Kappa Kappa Gamma who celebrated 100 years!
You become a better version of yourself.
While being a part of Greek life is a shit ton of fun, it's also a lot of responsibility. In my fraternity, we are told to that by being admitted to membership, we are given a mark of distinction and should take "just" pride. You not only carry yourself but carry your organization everywhere with you. I can't speak for everyone, but Greek life is one of the best decisions I made in my life.
You'll regret if you don't go Greek. You have nothing to lose.
Going through recruitment or checking out Fraternities, you have nothing to lose. If you don't like it, you can simply leave. So many friends of mine graduating wonder what their experience would have been like if they were Greek. They never even gave it a chance. So take the chance, go Greek!
If you do make the decision: Welcome to the good life.
