In the last two years, Twenty One Pilots has gone from playing in smaller venues around the country to selling out arenas all over the world. Their success is not from recycling pop music that everyone likes, but from being themselves and sharing the truth about their life. Their music is an expression of their love, depression, and anxieties that they have faced. They are one of the best artists of today because they are sincere, humble, and are not afraid to be themselves.
They are true to themselves and to their fans. Through their abstract and complex lyrics, they express how they feel and reach out to others who are facing their same struggles. The metaphors and passion they put into every beat, breath, and lyric save people from falling into a pit of hopelessness and inspire others to persevere. Their lyrics are not only powerful, but they are also witty. Their lyrics bring to light so much hope and inspiration because they are so true and relatable. Who can resist an introspective beat and clever lyrics? In addition, their fans are literally part of them. They always say "We are Twenty One Pilots and so are you." Their fanbase called "the Clique" is the black in between their other colors of red and blue. They wear masks because they don't want people to know them, they want the people to know the music.
They are some of the best guys out there. They love Columbus, their hometown, and always come home. Being from Columbus, it is so cool to hear of them visiting their high schools, catching up with their friends, and taking pictures with their fans on the streets. It is safe to say that fame has not changed them, and that is one of the most amazing qualities they possess. So many people lose sight of what is important, but they never have and never will.
Seeing people be themselves is one of the most inspiring things to me because today so many people pretend to be someone they are not. They continue to blow my mind whenever they perform live. They even accepted a Grammy in their boxers. They have no shame and will always be themselves. Their performances incorporate the symbolism of their struggles through life. Everything they do means something to them. The makeup they wear is their warpaint that they wear in "battle." The battle is their battle with their insecurities and anxieties, and they are here to fight with us.
Through their powerful lyrics and sincere and humble mentalities, Tyler and Josh are the greatest artists. They do it all: save, inspire, encourage, and entertain. Their music never gets old and everyone can relate. Whenever I have doubts or experience anxiety, their music cures it even for just a little while. They give me hope and inspire me to continue on even through the darkest times. They say, "when Christianity refuses to encounter, it stops being what it is" so they never stop encountering. They use their struggles to help others and have made incredible impacts on people that words cannot even describe. Thank you, Tyler and Josh; you guys truly are best.
