With everything going on in the media currently, there have been some major breakthroughs with our president. Throwing it back to 2016, I was so confused on who to vote for. It was my first election, and I was trying desperately to sort through all of my thoughts. Would I side with my conservative parents and vote Donald Trump, or choose the more liberal candidate Hilary Clinton?
All my life I had been surrounded by conservative thoughts and ideals. Growing up in an upper middle class suburb in California, most of my friends and friends' parents were registered Republicans. I was so confused on which side to take. When I got to college, I began to become much more socially liberal, as I now consider myself a libertarian (even though I register as Independent).I, as many others, very much disliked both candidates. For most of my generation, this was choice of picking between the worst two kinds of evils in the world of Washington DC. With the event of Clinton and Benghazi, along with the "lost" personal emails, I then began to make clear of the decision I would have to make. What made everything even more difficult was the social aspect of my beliefs. I consider myself a feminist, I believe in equal rights for people of all colors, and I advocate deeply for gay rights. This caused my decision to become even more tough.
To me at first, it didn't seem like Trump was taking the election seriously at all. By making crude remarks towards women (Megyn Kelly most notably for me), along with his "locker-room talk" video that was leaked, I was so confused. Would I rather have a misogynistic and degrading president, or a president who was the cause of the deaths of 4 Americans in Libya (and later attempting to cover them up)? After throughly researching the Benghazi case, I came to my final conclusion and voted Trump.
To be honest, I had very little faith in Trump at first. I really did not expect much at all from his presidency and figured that it would be a short four years until another candidate was elected; it wasn't until I started seeing results from our President. After the Bashar Al-assad regime incident (using chemical weapons on men, women, and children) Trump took great measures to ban this type of weaponry from being used. Another huge determining factor for me, being raised Catholic, was when Trump recognized Jerusalem as Israel's capital. Four previous presidents promised to do it, and Trump was the first to make this historic proclamation happen. Another great accomplishment, financially, was when Trump finally persuaded NATO to contribute $12 billion dollars more to our nation's security. Again, many presidents had tried urging NATO for this, and Trump was the only one with the hard-ball convincing that allowed it to be possible.
The biggest achievement of Trump's, in my opinion, is one that occurred a little over a week ago. President Trump held a summit with North Korean leader, Kim Jung Un, which resulted in a document that promised from both parties to "work toward complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula." This was the most successful summit since Gorbachev and President Reagan in the late 80's.
I don't hate Trump because he is one of the first presidents to have done what he promised to do. President Trump's personal life no longer concerns me. As long as President Trump equally advocates publicly for all citizens, and continues to lead this great nation safely, I have no complaints. Sure, I wouldn't exactly call President Trump a perfect person by any means, but I do believe he is a good leader. My point is there is a much bigger picture here. I really could care less about his family life or even his personal beliefs. He made me, as well as many other people around the world, become a lot safer with the denuclearizing of North Korea.
Being President isn't always about being so politically and socially correct anymore. As we move into the future, there are much bigger issues that matter, like national safety. Being the leader of the United States is more about maintaining national security, continuing to lead a nation that keeps peace around the world, and continuing to elevate our nation's economy. So I guess after all, I don't hate Trump.
