Another year, another entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. ThorRagnarok opened out last week to $431 million worldwide. The Thor franchise has always been the weakest link in the MCU, but now they have brought in Kiwi director Taiki Waititi to take control and it may have been their best decision yet.
The New Zealand filmmaker brought his humor and wittiness from his lesser known and better films, Hunt for the Wilderpeople and What We Do in the Shadows, to the third installment of the Thor franchise.
It's the best Thor movie yet and one of the best Marvel movies ever, thanks to Waititi. Part of Marvel's success stems from hiring unknown directors with small filmographies, but with a lot of talent and potential (Jon Watts, for example, with Spider-Man: Homecoming).
The problem with the first two Thor movies was their lack of humor, another attribute of Marvel's success: not taking themselves too seriously. Waititi gave Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Mark Ruffalo, and even the Hulk a sort of reset of their characters with the addition of Jeff Goldblum and Waititi himself voicing a character, and it paid off.
The result is a newborn Thor film that's almost an outright comedy. Hemsworth and Ruffalo look like they are having a blast. Tessa Thompson is awesome as a warrior Valkyrie while Cate Blanchett, however, is a typical Marvel villain and she knows it, which is a shame for one of the best actresses working today.
Thor: Ragnarok is a good time, it's worth one trip to the theaters and that's about it. I get it, that's what these movies are for. But even a new, funnier Marvel movie with a slight change of identity still feels like a Marvel movie.
I couldn't help watching the climax and feeling a little tired of seeing the same thing. It's all getting a little old, these superheroes flying around, spitting jokes while defeating the villain with the same goal: rule the world, or in Thor's case, take over Asgard. Now, there's about to be one giant amalgamation of every superhero in the MCU when Avengers: Infinity War rolls around next year.
It's not just Marvel either, Warner Bros. is releasing Justice League this month continuing their DC universe. So far, Wonder Woman has been the only satisfying entry in that universe while Justice League doesn't look too promising.
Superhero movies, especially Marvel movies, are great, but there are so many better alternatives like Waititi's other films I listed above. Hunt for the Wilderpeople is just as fun, but with more heart. What We Do in the Shadows is a hilarious mockumentary about vampires living in modern times. There are so many better, more worthwhile films than superhero movies.
I love superhero films and I'll definitely be seeing Infinity War but only for the fun, because that's all they are for. Life and stories have so much more to offer than that. I'm not saying you should disown superhero movies; I just think we should be a little more open-minded, dig deeper and find those more fulfilling, relatable stories.
There's plenty out there, you just have to look, because Hollywood, unfortunately, isn't where you are going to find most of them anymore.
