Why This Generation Is Leading Us Nowhere

I recently watched a segment titled "Memorial Day Morons: Americans Clueless About Holiday and Reason For It." Mark Dice interviewed beach goers in San Diego and asked them if they know the true meaning behind Memorial Day. To say the least, I was baffled by their answers. Some confessed that they didn’t know what it meant, and others said they simply didn’t care. This display of ignorance opened my eyes to the society we are living in today. America is content with their ignorance.

Society has taken a plunge and with the generation centered on social media, fame, money, and material things, it will only get worse.

Important holidays such as Memorial Day and Veterans Day no longer have the meaning that they used to. Society looks at these historical events as another day that they don’t have to go to work or school; it’s just a day to flip burgers, go swimming and get drunk. We are so detached from the world, and the meaning of life has dramatically shifted.

Why is the detachment only growing further and further away? Well for starters, it’s because of our lack of ability to appreciate this life that we all live. Society is so consumed with social media and other ‘fulfilling wants and needs’ that we are blind to the more important things. All we care about is the fact that we have a day off from having to do something worthwhile.

What most of us don’t understand is that these men that fought for our country are the primary reason we don’t have to get up and drag off to work for just one day; the reason we get to have an extended weekend. It is important things like these that some of us are blind to.

Another major problem is that some people were never taught the meaning of Memorial Day. This has a lot to do with parents and other parental figures. In order for your child to appreciate the true meaning of the day and appreciate what thousands of men did for us, we need to let our children know the significance of this day.

This Age of Ignorance is leading America in a downward spiral. The individuals who Mark Dice interviewed in the video are voters of our country; that’s pretty terrifying. An American requirement should be to know the significance of Memorial Day… at the least! With this society centered on less than important things, it takes away from the bigger picture of America. Our country has a long list of historical events and in my opinion, to be a resident of this country, we should know about them. Not knowing why we have a day off from work or school or why black civilians have the same rights we do is just a disgrace.

All in all, the empty-headedness in this video is truly pathetic. Help yourself now and don’t be a part of this crowd. Be an American that knows why we are here and how we got to this point. History is more important than you think.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
