Let me start by saying this: I am a liberal. I'm one of those "snowflakes" that conservatives and Republicans alike are constantly fighting against. Especially concerning social issues, I am as far left as you can get. And I strongly, strongly dislike Donald Trump.
November 8th, 2016 was one of the worst days of my life. When the state of Ohio turned red, correctly predicting that Trump would win the presidency, my world shattered. My roommate and I stayed up the entire night, hoping for the slightest chance that this was all a mistake. There was no way that he could win; there was simply no way that so many Americans could have been blindsided by his false promises, that so many people could support him and believe that he was what this country needed. But it wasn't a nightmare; it was our new reality.
As his first 100 days in office came and went, so did my faith in humanity and hope for this nation. Trump appointed Neil Gorsuch to the highest court in the land, a man likely to side against the working class and the poor. He minimized the Affordable Care Act, effectively moving to take healthcare away from millions of Americans that would otherwise be unable to receive the care that they need. He signed an executive order to carry out the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline and approved the Keystone XL Pipeline, therefore, damaging Native American's main water supply and impacting the ecosystems in the affected areas by possibly exposing the ground water to a leak. He imposed an immigration block attempting to seal off the borders to "the land of the free" to those that he deemed unworthy of this country.
While I fiercely oppose almost everything he stands for and everything he's "accomplished," I believe that without him in office our world would have continued on its straight path. He's already brought us through extreme twists and turns, but the resistance that has risen in opposition to his policies, temper tantrums, and other emotional outbursts has brought over 70% of Americans together. We've become united more so than we have been in recent years all in order to better ourselves, our families, our neighbors, and our country as a whole.
We care more. We're more emotionally connected to the things that are happening right outside our homes, and because of that we pay more attention to the entire world.
I hate Donald Trump, but I can say for sure that having him as the face of our country has unified social classes, races, ethnicities, religions and everyone in between. We've created entire communities, met new people, and made new connections, all in a positive opposition to this new leadership. People are coming together in ways that would never have happened had they not had a common enemy.
In the face of adversity, we've proved that we, the citizens of this planet, will be resilient against evil. We will stand up for what we believe we deserve, what we know we need, and what we understand will benefit everyone as a whole. We've chosen to fight. We insist upon what's right, and we aren't going to let Donald Trump stop us until we've won.
