UNESCO is part of the United Nations. It stands for "United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization. The United States helped found the organization but now they're leaving again. The first time the US left was under President Reagan because of a pro-Soviet bias. Under President George W Bush, the US rejoined in the name of international cooperation.
The Trump administration decided to pull out again because of financial reasons and an anti-Israel bias.
UNESCO puts a lot of good into the world. It was created after World War II to promote the flow of ideas, information, and culture around the world. UNESCO makes advancements in world education, science, and includes the World Heritage program which helps maintain important cultural sites around the globe.
However, like it's parent, United Nations, UNESCO has an Israel problem.
Israel is really unlucky when it comes to its location. It's in the middle east and is more or less surrounded by Arab countries that hate it. A lot of countries that hate it happen to be in the UN and UNESCO. The US is Israel's strongest ally and sometimes needs to make controversial decisions in order to continue to be just that.
So what exactly is UNESCO's anti-Israel bias? Well, in 2011 UNESCO voted in Palestine as an official member, at which point the United States stopped paying its dues. But that was only the beginning. Last year, Israel cut off its ties to the agency after UNESCO passed a controversial resolution that didn't acknowledge certain Israeli religious sites in Jerusalem and the West Bank.
Over the summer, UNESCO angered Israel and the United States by declaring the old West Bank city of Hebron a World Heritage Site.
Pulling out of the organization was also a financial decision because the US currently pays $80 million a year to the organization through their Paris office, despite no longer paying dues. The Trump administration had planned on pulling out from UNESCO for months and officially did so today.
Through decisions like these, the United States continues to be the ally that Israel needs.
