In our generation, there has been an impressive amount of women who have broken the glass ceiling or have pushed boundaries in order to be considered successful in their field.
Every role model I can imagine in my life is a woman, maybe that's because I, too am a woman, but I think there is something to say about women who work for what they want in the face of barriers. There are three women that come to mind when I think of my role models in entertainment.
I would define these women as comedy queens and overall girl bosses.
Amy Poehler, Tina Fey, and Mindy Kaling are the definition of girl bosses in my opinion. In the face of a male-dominated field, they pursued and found themselves as some of the most successful women in comedy.
Starting out in low-level comedy clubs and developing their craft to being the queens they are now they have each come a long way.
Each of these women understands that in order for women to be successful in any career they can't be afraid of breaking stereotypes.
All three of them have been on sitcoms or have even written for sitcoms and the humor they convey makes it known that they want to break stereotypes for women.
Being the prettiest or the most popular girl in the room doesn't matter always and you can be the smartest or the funniest girl in the room instead.
They didn't become successful by being the pretty faces of comedy. They became successful by being funny and showing that they have what it takes to be on top in their field. In fact, they shouldn't have to be even remotely attractive to be a success at all.
They can be ugly or different because they have the confidence to know that their merit isn't based on their appearance. These women know funny and that's all that should be considered when it comes to their careers.
Probably the biggest thing I've learned from them is that girls can be funny, witty, sarcastic, or sassy and it's totally okay.
Embracing it and not hiding in the fact that people think you're so much of any or all of those things makes you stand out. Having people say that boys don't like funny or opinionated girls has only made me want to be one of those girls more.
These women have shown me that it's okay if some people don't like that because there will always be people who do like it.
So if you know nothing about these women I would suggest checking them out, watching their shows, and reading their books.
There is no doubt these women are funny, smart, sassy, and all around girl bosses so why wouldn't you want to be like them?
