Every year people around the country bask in the glory of Independence Day or The Fourth of July. With the holiday just days away, it’s time to reflect on why so many people consider this holiday to be one of the best days of the year.
Now, it wouldn’t be a proper celebration of the fourth without barbecues, right? When you think of The Fourth of July normally visions of gritty, charcoal grills and tender, mouthwatering burgers float through your mind. The Fourth of July is probably one of the few days of the year where you are guaranteed a barbecue. So, lay down that red and white-checkered tablecloth that you see in every restaurant, crack open some crisp beers, open up that potato salad that everyone passes around and enjoy time with friends and family. There’s nothing like an old fashioned barbecue with the important ones in your life.
Barbecues are great, but they’re even better after a long day at the beach. If you’re near the ocean The Fourth of July is meant for the beach. Getting there early is essential because everyone wants to get to the beach to hopefully beat out the traffic that the holiday always brings with it. Sitting in your foldable beach chair you are sure to see a few sights while at the beach. You have the people who want to cool off from the July heat, so a dip in the greenish, salty water is always an option. Additionally, there is always a chance you have a father and son tossing the football down by the water. Kids streak down the wet sand trying to locate the pigskin in the bright, luminous sun. And of course, the holiday signifies the true start to summer. Nothing says summer like barbecues, the beach and outdoor activities.
Not only does everyone get outside and have a good time, but everyone is always in a good mood. The moment you realize that you live in the greatest country on Earth is a terrific feeling. People love a good USA! USA! USA! chant, but do it on the fourth, and everyone will be doing it with you. Dress up in an American flag suit; drink Budweiser out of their “America” cans, The Fourth of July is all about feeling good and there are many reasons to feel just that.
The Fourth of July brings with it many aspects that are indicative of summer. From the cookouts to sunny, beach weather; there is plenty to do. Knowing myself I will probably spend the fourth with some friends up in Rhode Island. The beach will be the primary source of our activities, as well as knocking back some cold ones and listening to The Boss’ Born in the USA. While we’re enjoying ourselves, however, be mindful of just how thankful we are to live in a country like America. Two hundred and forty one years ago from this Fourth of July is when we declare our independence from Britain. Soldiers of The Revolutionary War turned to each other and realized they were fighting for not just their own freedom, but also their own country. So, as we prepare to kick back on the fourth in the coming days, celebrate, but remember our roots and why we are able to enjoy this holiday every year.
