Previously, I wrote an article on how I thought showing musicals on television was actually beneficial because it allowed TV networks to reach a variety of audiences. That was before FOX announced their next musical was going to be "RENT". Now, I know what you're thinking: because I wrote that article, I should be excited that something as huge as "RENT" is going to be broadcasted to millions of viewers. While I think that "RENT" totally changed the game for Broadway musicals to come, I don't think "RENT" is something to bring to television.
"But it was made into a movie!" And it shouldn't have been. There was so much that was lost within the movie that it made it hard to follow. There was also tons left out of the story to make it not surpass a PG-13 rating.
Here's the thing: putting "RENT" on television will not only dumb the story down so much, it will cause controversy. The musical already caused the same controversy when it debut on Broadway in the 90s. Believe it or not, the world is still adjusting to the new norms. There is so much that could go wrong with FOX's reindition that it really shouldn't have been a thought in the first place.
Many songs will need to be edited for language, scenes and songs will have to be cut because of content, and the story will ultimately get lost in a television reindition. Now, some of you will read this and think that I'm calling it too early. The truth is, I've done two in depth projects based around the musical and know enough about it to know that this is a horrible idea. Theatre such as "RENT" is made to be viewed on the stage without filter. Putting a musical as controversial as "RENT" on other platforms causes it to be suppressed and the message is muddled. And for those of you thinking that the musical could do without the "F" bombs and suggestive material have not fully seen or understood the musical.
Another thing that could go wrong is the fact that one of the main characters, Angel, is a drag queen. If the producers are smart, they will stick to casting a male as Angel, as per the production. But with the problems of mis-gendering and casting white actors to play POC characters, this might be a detail that is overlooked, and that goes for every single character in the production. All I'm saying is that riots will be started if Angel is cast as a woman.
I think everyone at some point in their lives needs to see "RENT" because it is a truly unique musical of its time. However, it should be viewed solely on the stage where it can belong raw and uncensored, just like Jonathan Larson would've wanted it.
