Now, comes the week we've all been waiting for!
Thanks to Labor Day weekend, syllabus week stretches through the first two weeks of school. Regardless of your grade or age, you will forever and always love syllabus week.
Technically school has begun, and you need to wake up for class, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that you need to be awake during class. Syllabus week is what I like to think of as a grace period that buys us some time until we need to fully check into school. If I got a dollar for every time my professor read the entire syllabus word for word on the first day of class, I could probably pay for my college tuition.
I’m sure most classes do teach vital information within the first week, but this may be the only week where you aren’t overloaded with work from every single one of your classes. There is no such thing as a blow off class at U of I, so take advantage of this week because, soon, come the all nighters at the UGL. The only stressful part about syllabus week is realizing that you don’t like a class and need to change your schedule, pronto.
I like to refer to syllabus week as “syllabusy” week because of all the free time you are given to have a social life before you bury your head in books. From my past experiences with syllabus week, I noticed that most people tend to follow the same daily pattern. Wake up, go to class -- physically, if not mentally, go home to relax for an hour, get up and get ready for the amazing night life that Chambana has to offer.
One of the best things about syllabus week is that it intertwines with the oh-so-famous welcome week. With the countless frat parties
and jammed-packed bars this week can be chaotic, and with
barely any homework being assigned, almost everyone is out and about -- or should be. Green Street is like the Times Square of Champaign during syllabus
week. The bars close at 2 a.m., but the blasting stereos and frat chants don’t end
until about 4 a.m. I live on Green Street and heard the words of, “Don’t
Stop Believing,” through my window at 3:30 a.m., so I am not
exaggerating.
U of I is
an absolutely amazing school and syllabus week is only one
of the many great things that this University has to offer.
