A new law in Pennsylvania will allow for schools to get rid of snow days and instead have students complete school work at home in an effort to finish the school year on time. While good in theory, this new law has flaws that outweigh the positive aspects.
Let's look at the few positive aspects first. The first would be for students to have a longer summer since there wouldn't be any snow make-up days at the end of the school year. Another positive would be the teachers and students not getting behind schedule and everything could remain in an orderly fashion. I can't think of any other positive aspect.
Now on to the flaws.
Despite it being 2019, there are still people that don't have access to computers and the internet. This obviously makes it impossible for them to complete the online school work the school may assign which defeats the whole purpose of getting rid of snow days. What are they supposed to do? Go to the nearest library? If they were able to go to the library then they would be able to go to school.
The high school I attended gave all students a laptop but not every school does that. While more and more are giving students access to computers/tablets, we are a long way from every school doing that (mostly because of costs).
The only way this would work is if the school would provide access to both a device to do the homework on and provide internet. That's unrealistic you say? Well so is the whole idea of this law.
Also, whatever ever happened to kids being allowed to be kids? Snow days are something that a lot of kids look forward to and having to work on schoolwork during the day definitely takes away a portion of the fun.
We've all heard our parents say they trucked through large piles of snow and still attended school. We all know how unrealistic that is in this day and age. Since then, kids have had snow days off to play in the snow and enjoy a short break before going back to school.
Just let kids be kids. Yes, snow days are a pain in the butt but the solution that the new law is for will not work. If you truly want to get rid of snow days then find another workable way around it. This law will not do.
