'Why Should I Go On A Mission Trip?' I'm Glad You Asked

Going on a mission trip started my love of service.

'Why Should I Go On A Mission Trip?' I'm Glad You Asked

Every year since eighth grade I have made the trek from Columbus, Ohio, down to El Zorrillo, Mexico, for a week long mission trip. Before going for the first time I didn't really know what I was getting myself into. I knew that we were going to be building houses and that I would be with a lot of people that I didn't really know at the time. I was feeling a whole range of emotions. I was excited because it was going to be a new experience. I was nervous because I wasn't sure what exactly was going to happen. I was scared that it wouldn't live up to the expectations that I had for it.

That first trip exceeded my expectations tenfold and was the start of my passion for service. I learned so many things over that week. It's too easy to just donate money, say " I did my part" and be done with it. It's when you have the opportunity to go donate your time that it becomes something more. You can talk to other people about what it's like to be there, but it's not until you can experience it for yourself that you fully understand how important it is for you to be there.

Yes, it's hot, you're outside all day, and you're tired, but when you see the family that you're building the house for none of that matters anymore. You're giving the family a new home, but you get so much more out of it. They may not have much, but everyone is happy regardless of what is going on.

It teaches you to be more appreciative. You almost feel guilty for what you have when you get home. It's not just the people that you're building the house for that makes it worth it but also the people you're building the house with. You may start off as strangers at the begining of the week but by the end it feels like you've known them your whole life. I am so thankful for every single person that I get to spend time with throughout the week and for the opportunity to travel.

I highly encourage anyone reading this, if they aren't already, to start doing some kind of community service. It doesn't have to be as elaborate as going on a trip. You could volunteer at your local soup kitchen or homeless shelter every once in a while. There's a whole list of things to choose from and plenty of websites to get ideas from. Nobody can do everything, but everyone can do something.

Here are a few websites with great volunteer opportunities!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Whether you met your new love interest online, through mutual friends, or another way entirely, you'll definitely want to know what you're getting into. I mean, really, what's the point in entering a relationship with someone if you don't know whether or not you're compatible on a very basic level?

Consider these 21 questions to ask in the talking stage when getting to know that new guy or girl you just started talking to:

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
