For the past few years, "Game of Thrones" has been the T.V. show phenomenon that has captivated everyone. Like literally everyone. From the incredibly sexy and brooding bastard Jon Snow to the incredibly beautiful and big-hearted dragon queen Dany, there is a character for all of us to love and desire.
However, this is the first summer where ‘Thrones has a competitor for T.V.’s most entertaining show in "Rick and Morty." Although it is not as grandiose, "Rick and Morty" has taken the internet (especially Reddit) by storm with its zany scenarios, pitch-black humor, and neurotic characters.
And now that both shows will be airing new episodes each Sunday for the next couple weeks, fans of both shows have plenty to rejoice. But if there is one show you shouldn’t miss, it’s obvious to me that the choice is "Rick and Morty"
Don’t get me wrong, so far, the new season of "Game of Thrones" has been extremely pleasing. With only eight episodes this season, compared to the usual ten, it seems the show creators were eager not to waste any time. Unlike seasons past, most the scenes this season possess significance and pertain to the question everyone wants to know: Who will sit on the Iron Throne?
Because of this, the pacing of the plot this season has been exceptional. Many of the long-standing characters, such as Arya, Bran, Dany, etc. are back into the fold and are no longer doing their own thing. We are blessed with scenes with Jon Snow, Dany, and Tyrion, arguably the show’s most beloved characters, all in the same room conversing over the future of Westeros. And I think we can all agree we get teary-eyed for every Stark reunion.
So minus the Ed Sheeran cameo, this season so far has been a success and looks to have a strong finish. But after the return of "Rick and Morty"season 3, I think it’s fair to say "Game of Thrones" is no longer the best show on T.V.
Although these shows are quite different, I still think you can say that "Rick and Morty" is overall a better show. I’m comfortable saying this because despite being mainly a comedy, "Rick and Morty" has more relatable/in-depth characters and is a more meaningful show.
If you look at "Game of Thrones," lots of itscharacters have become one-dimensional and predictable. All of them have clear cut motives, and although the plot is entertaining, all character arcs have become stagnant and dry. Even with the new characters like Euron Greyjoy becoming more prominent, I can’t help feeling that we’ve already know everything there is to know about this character.
On the other hand, the beginning of "Rick and Morty" season 3 actually does quite a bit of character development, as the official premiere episode focuses on the very relatable problem of divorce. And to my surprise, the episode almost had a didactic approach to the problem and accurately portrays how families deal with divorce.
Now, the literal way they deal with the divorce is still the absurd science-fiction we’ve come to associate with the show. Most the episode takes place in a "Mad-Max" pastiche where we get to witness how Morty and his sister Summer are reacting to their parents’ divorce, both indulging in over the top acts of violence that can only occur in a post-apocalyptic world.
But even with the silliness and dark humor associated with Morty and Summer’s reactions, the show captures the teen-angst so many of us felt growing up with divorced parents or parents with an unhappy marriage. And because of this, the premiere of season 3 could provoke emotions you’d expect from a show like "Game of Thrones."
This aspect of "Rick and Morty" gets so overlooked because of how hilarious the show is. But because of its multifaceted characters and dark humor, the show is able to touch on meaningful problems such as depression, death, and divorce.
I will obviously be watching both shows this summer, but the new season of "Rick and Morty" appears ready to offer the same amount of pathos with infinitely more humor than "Game of Thrones." It will be nice to see what happens with Jon Snow, Dany, and the fate of Westeros, but no matter what happens it can't compete with the new adventures of Rick and Morty.
