Why Procrastinating Is A Good Thing

Procrastination should not be seen as a negative. Here is why.

Why Procrastinating Is A Good Thing

At the beginning of each week, I go through my typical homework routine. I sit myself at my desk, look at my planner for my assignments, and think "Oh, I don't need to work on that for a few more days, I still have time". Whether it's studying for a test, working on math, or writing, I usually just work on what is the most urgent at that time, and save other stuff for later. But then I eventually find myself stressed because I've now pushed something off so much that I only have a day or two to complete it. This happens way too often. I used to be annoyed and angry at myself for procrastinating too much, but now I've learned to embrace it. If you're also a procrastinator, here's why you should embrace it too:

1. Working under pressure motivates you to get the most done in the shortest amount of time.

When you have to finish an important assignment in a short amount of time, you will be motivated to do as much as you possibly can within that time constraint, because you really don't have a choice. Because of this, you will write as much down as possible and not second guess your work too much. After all, you can always go back and edit your work once you are done, so you might as well have as much writing to work with as possible!

2. You're ideas become more creative.

When you have no choice but to complete an assignment because you've put it off for so long, there comes a point where you will literally come up with anything substantial in order to turn in something above average. This can encourage you to think outside the box, and think back to everything you have learned within the past few days or weeks to help you complete the assignment. And even if you are just thinking about the assignment a few days before you start it, you will subconsciously already have ideas in your head that you can develop.

3. You learn how to prioritize and make good decisions.

Prioritizing is a life skill, and no one masters this skill like a procrastinator! When you are forced to pick your battles, you learn not only how to make the wisest decisions when it comes to finishing your work, but you also learn the skills to make the best decisions in any scenario. When you are given a very short amount of time to make a decision, us procrastinators know how to make the smartest impulse decisions because, after all, we have to make these decisions every night when studying!

So instead of stressing yourself out when you feel you've procrastinated, remember that you are not alone and you're actually smarter than you may think!

Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
