As I struggled to find a topic to write about that seemed worthwhile, I did a little searching on high talking points currently trending on social media and all over today's news.
What I started discovering is how almost every topic worth talking about finds its way to be connected to politics. Whether it be a statement made by someone well known that comes across offensive, holiday spirit and events put on to celebrate the season, or just a simple dinner conversation, politics always finds a way to weave into it.
If you’ve ever been a part of a political discussion you may realize that it's not a happy mood that carries it but usually one with force and sometimes anger behind an individual’s tone.
Politics can tend to draw out differences and puts a wall between two people that had a close connection but after talking through a political argument, they don’t see each other the same. But why is that? Why do we let negativity have such a major impact on our lives?
Yes, I understand it is important to discuss and we, as Americans, should be well educated on what is occurring, but why do we allow it to have SO much control over our lives? My sister and I are two girls who find that dinner conversation should not turn into a political outbreak. That the time spent around a table is a time used for at least majority happy conversation.
Every time the conversation turns political, my sister and I make sure to turn it away even if that means saying something random to change the subject. With this, we lighten the mood and remind those with us that there is more to talk about than political differences.
Being a part of this “change,” first hand, I can honestly say I am much more joyful when politics is discussed minimally and happy topics are seen more important.
