As the process of confirming Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court continues, many Democrats have made it clear that they intend to block his nomination, and possibly even filibuster. Although two democrats have announced that they plan to vote to confirm him, it still is not enough to get him confirmed.
It is not clear why Democrats would want to block Gorsuch, to begin with, other than to send a message that they are against the other side. If you look at Gorsuch’s credentials, they are quite good for the most part. He has the highest possible rating from the American Bar Association. His voting record also does not suggest too much trouble for the left, given that in the vast majority of the cases he decided, the decision was unanimous, meaning that in those cases the liberal judges on the panel were in agreement with him.
Aside from that, even if his past record did spell trouble for democrats and people who support liberal policies, the Supreme Court is not going to be more conservative than it was before, given that Gorsuch is replacing Scalia, another conservative. In other words, the Supreme Court will have the same liberal to conservative balance as before, and it was with that liberal to conservative balance that the Court ruled in favor of gay marriage and other liberal policies. Gorsuch certainly doesn't pose a risk to the liberal agenda.
