Let’s be honest—September 22nd might be the start of fall, but it doesn’t really feel like it until the first few days of October creep in. It’s the month of crisp autumn colors, pumpkin picking, apple cider, and, well, a lot of other things that make it the best month of the year.
First, let’s talk about movies. I’m a huge scary movie buff, from cult classics like Nightmare on Elm Street and The Shining to the more modern takes like Haunting in Connecticut, Paranormal Activity, and Don’t Breathe. October is basically a gift to all scary movie lovers—an entire month dedicated to terrifying films gearing up for Halloween. I, for one, am eager to fill out a weekend roster of films for the four weeks!
Second, September might bring down the temperature a few degrees, but October is where we can finally start to say it’s sweater weather. And who doesn’t love that? Time to ditch the tight summer clothes for large, comfy knits that make everyone feel like they’re wrapped in a blanket.
Third…colors, colors, colors! For anyone addicted to photography like me, October is the best month for taking outdoor pictures with stellar backgrounds. The golden light and crisp leaves make every photo turn out gorgeous—no filter needed.
Let’s not forget about cider. Caramel apples. Pumpkin pie. Candy corn. Need I say more? Food changes with the seasons, and the peak of fall brings a lot of delicious ones. It’s time for the era of warm, wholesome, homemade treats and an excuse to ditch the diet for a few weeks, because, really, who can resist?
Finally—who can forget about Halloween? It is practically an end-of-the-month celebration for October, culminating in the most hype weekend of the year. It’s the one night of the year, however cliché, to be the thing you’ve always wanted. You can dress up, put on some crazy makeup, and party like there’s no tomorrow. It also means a lot of candy, booze, and dancing when you’re at college—which takes typical trick-or-treating up a level.
