In the English language, we have thousands of words we can use to express our feelings. Whenever we feel happy, we can use words such as overjoyed, ecstatic or gleeful. Likewise, whenever we are sad we can say we feel meloncholy, blue or devastated. However, despite the various choices in words that I have as an English speaker, there are none that I could string together that could adequately describe how much I hate saying goodbye.
Throughout my life, I have been fortunate enough to meet people from all over the world. From the bright city of New Orleans to the beautiful island of Trinidad and Tobago, each person has touched my life in different ways. While it is amazing to have had the opportunity to meet all of these people, the worst part was when they had to leave.
I have always been really bad at goodbyes. You know the girl in the movies that is collapsed on the chair in the airport with her head on her lap, crying? That is usually me. Typically I collect myself within the half hour after the person or people have left me. However, recently I have adopted a new idea. Instead of saying goodbye. I now say see you later and believe that even when it seems unlikely, people will show up again in your life.
Even though there are over seven billion people in the world, it is actually quite small. People who you have not seen in years could pop up in the most unexpected places. Your childhood neighbor could easily be in your first Monday/Wednesday/Friday class freshman year of college. Someone who you worked with at your first job could easily become your neighbor at your first house.
So as college graduates part ways with their friends as they head into the real world, my advice to them would be not to worry about when they are going to see each other again. The great Winnie the Pooh once said, "How lucky am I to have someone who makes it so hard to say goodbye." Cherish the fact you have people who you never want to leave your side. Remember, it is never goodbye, but see you later
