Growing up, fast food was always my first pick for a meal. It was fast, easy, and accessible; I mean you can get 10 chicken nuggets at McDonald’s for a $1.50. Being a kid, I never thought about what I was eating, I just knew I was hungry and wanted comfort food. Now that I am getting older, I like to make healthier choices because I am not the kid I used to be. Unhealthy food doesn’t sit well with me, plus eating healthy has a ton of benefits.
Now, when I buy my meat, fruits, and vegetables, I used to buy what I could find and what was the most inexpensive. Recently, I watched the documentary “Food Inc.” This documentary shined a light on the inhumane food companies across America and the way their treat their animals and products. I was horrified by the showings in this film. It made me rethink what I am actually putting into my body. What I thought was healthy is actually the complete opposite.
Buying raw chicken, raw fish, raw meat and even fruits and vegetables was always something that I never really thought would be a bad thing if it were not organic. To be honest with you, I never really knew the difference between organic and non-organic foods. I never thought that the difference was so drastic on our health.
Non-organic meat is pumped with different chemicals to keep it fresh as well as soaked in ammonia to kill the bacteria. The animals on these non-organic farms are treated horribly and their conditions are awful. Chickens are put into coops with no windows. They never see the light of day and that is all they know. They are forced to be in a small space with hundreds of other chickens, and some get so large they can hardly stand up. They aren’t treated like animals; they’re treated like objects
.
Many non-organic farmers feed their cattle corn products and byproducts. The product is cheap and the corn fattens the cattle’s stomachs quickly. Since they cannot properly digest and process grains it can increase their Omega-6 and Omega-3 fatty acids, which in turn is unhealthy for human consumption, according to Bill Kiernan of Global AgInvestigating. It makes the cattle feel sick and sluggish and more prone to developing E. coli. According to the author of The Omnivore’s Dilemma, Michael Pollan states that switching feedlot cattle to a grass diet would eliminate 80% of the E. coli in the cow’s digestive tracts. This is the ugly truth behind non-organic farming and how dangerous eating non-organic food really can be.
Organic foods have so many more health benefits for humans than we think. Though the organic foods are pricier, in the long run it will be better for our health. Quality over quantity is true in this situation. In addition, organic foods have a ton more nutrients whereas nutrients from conventionally grown foods are lost in the process.
The dangers of eating non-organic food are unknown to many people. It can be drastic on our overall wellbeing. At many fast food chains, you can buy a whole meal for under $5, so it's no wonder this food is so popular, but so unhealthy. By easing in organic foods to your diet, you are cutting out unwanted chemicals and GMOs as well as protecting your body from harmful diseases and illnesses. It’s worth the cost to live your longest and feel your best, just a healthy food for thought.
