It’s not your average sitcom but it definitely is one of the best and most outlandish shows currently on the air. I’d go as far as to even call it comedic gold and a definite must-see for any college student. I’ve been watching the show since it first came out and I already cannot wait for the seventh and final season to air.
If you’ve never heard of this amazingly clever show let me break it down and tell you why you should binge watch this series on Netflix asap and prepare yourself for the upcoming final season. It will definitely be one you do not want to miss.
The show takes place in Los Angeles, California and unlike most shows set in the City of Angels, New Girl does not follow the lives of characters who moved to LA to pursue their dreams in the entertainment industry. Au Contraire, it follows the life of a bunch of 20-30-somethings who for the most part are still trying to figure their lives out.
"New Girl" originally centers around the “New Girl” herself, Jessica Day
Jessica Day is every quirky girl's spirit animal. She’s the girl next door who also happens to be a spirited, passionate teacher, and designated grandma of the loft who doesn’t let the fact that she lives with 3 other men she met off of craigslist (does it sound interesting yet?) stop her from being her fun and adorable self.
If you are the percentage of the population that happens to find quirky and peppy people to be a little annoying, HAVE NO FEAR!! The show's writers do an amazing job of illustrating that in the funniest way. From her interactions with the other characters in the loft to guest stars and smaller principal roles, no one can resist ultimately loving her for the kind-hearted, truly weird person she is.
In some ways, I would classify this sitcom as an updated Friends series. Now, for my fellow Friends enthusiasts and mega-fans, I know what I’m saying can be a bit of a stretch but let me explain. There are just so many similarities in both shows. For example, both shows have an empty apartment across the way, that goes from being inhabited at certain points to totally empty.
They both have a designated self-proclaimed ladies man, a character that used to be fat and is now super hot, a central meeting location (central perk and the bar), a dynamic duo; Nick and Schmidt (New Girl), and Joey and Chandler (Friends) and still provide a realness to their show. This is done through incredibly relatable characters with absolutely no boundaries thanks to strong character development, specific quirks, and habits that contribute to the uncontrollable laughter and love the audience feels towards the show and its cast.
I mean, let’s face it. There are not too many sitcoms around that still provide quality entertainment and still maintain a huge following and connection with the audience for seven consecutive seasons! Honestly, when you think of these types of shows that had this much of a significant impact on the industry and its audience, most people will immediately think back to the classic 90’s sitcoms they’ve seen on Netflix and realize that other than The Office and Parks and Rec, these quality shows have been in short supply as of late.
To try and put all of the amazingness of this soon to be classic sitcom into one article is EXTREMELY DIFFICULT. But to do my best to put it into words, it’s “simply adorkable”. This masterpiece has even managed to go against the grain by using comedy to discuss some political and controversial topics as well as stood out in the industry for an ethnically diverse and extremely talented cast.
So tell me, what more would you need to complete your Netflix watch history other than a diverse and unique group of friends containing everything from an ex-pro basketball player turned LAPD officer and his cat Fergie, a school teacher, model, hilarious Jew, who loves to quote Beyonce (more specifically Crazy in Love; Season 4: Episode 21), and a lovable, bartender doofus?
If you are looking to add a little extra sunshine and happiness to your dreary days, I 100% recommend that you decide to make New Girl the next show you watch. And if this article doesn’t convince you, maybe knowing that after conducting a poll to scope out how many real fans of the show think you’d love it too, I can confirm that 87 percent of my Instagram followers believe you should take the plunge and watch it too. So, happy Netflix binging and may you laugh till your belly hurts, your eyes water and your face turns red.
